Summary

South Forsyth High School in Cumming, GA, is a large, top-performing public high school serving 2,634 students in grades 9-12 as part of the highly rated Forsyth County School District. The school has ranked in the top 3% of Georgia high schools for a decade, currently sitting at 11th in the state, and holds a perfect 5-star rating.

What truly sets South Forsyth apart is its combination of elite academics and remarkable student engagement. The graduation rate is an exceptional 98.7%—more than 11 points above the state average—and has stayed above 98% for five straight years. In Biology, 87% of students are proficient, outpacing the state by nearly 40 points and beating nearby Lambert High School (85.5%). The school also excels in U.S. History (64.8% proficient vs. 38.5% statewide) and serves all students well, ranking in the 92nd percentile or higher for Asian, Hispanic, and special education students. Perhaps most impressive is the dramatic turnaround in attendance: chronic absenteeism has plummeted from 21.9% in 2021-2022 to just 4.9% today—about a quarter of the state rate and among the lowest in the area. The one inconsistency is Algebra I, where proficiency has swung between 46% and 74% in recent years, though the latest 73.8% is well above the state's 48.1%.

Compared to peers, South Forsyth delivers outstanding results at a moderate cost of $11,367 per student—far less than Northview High School ($15,167) or Cambridge High School ($15,530)—while outperforming most of them. It edges out West Forsyth High School and Forsyth Central High School in nearly every metric, though Alliance Academy for Innovation posts slightly higher scores with a smaller, more selective enrollment. For families seeking a large school with proven, consistent excellence, strong STEM programs, and a culture of attendance and achievement, South Forsyth is a standout choice.

Open Quote Very strong academics and extracurricular programs. Parent & community support is a key component of the school's success. Overall, the students are great kids with ambitious goals it's a positive environment on a daily basis. Teachers & coaches are very dedicated to developing college ready students. Our kids are thriving...we are extremely satisfied. Close Quote

Open Quote I agree with the previous parent's review and have had the same poor experiences. The school now has over 3,400 students with a freshman class of 998. I have dealt with errors being made on schedules with little to no help in correcting and schedules being moved and changed five days into classes even though the student was happy with his original schedule. Administration states there is nothing that can be done because the school is so crowded. The administration has definitely made the students and the parents feel as they are a number and not individuals. The school is trying to play catch up when they could have been more prepared. It is not the great school it used to be. We will be leaving this district when we can. Close Quote

Open Quote Parents need to be aware that the school is extremely over crowded and that the administration will shuffle your child where ever they can fit them regardless of what is good for the student. The counselors are useless. They will not work with you at all to solve any types of scheduling issues. Even though they admitted mistakenly placing our son in the wrong level of math class, they will not move him. They suggested we spend $50 an hour for a tutor. Which it turns out is hard to find since so many kids at the school need one. The new administration is apparently not as good as the last that left for a new school. Close Quote

Open Quote Only school in the Forsyth public school systems to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, which employs a few unique advantages on the higher level high school education while mandating a more comprehensive weighted class curriculum on students.

The school also has been a forerunner in offering STEM classes geared towards some of the more in-demand career paths students will expand upon in college; many of them for college credit.

The dip in teachers can be attributed to the opening of nearby West and Lambert schools, although South Forsyth retained an enormous amount of teaching talent. Close Quote
