Summary

DeKalb Preparatory Academy Charter is a K-8 charter school in Decatur, GA, serving 537 students within the DeKalb County school district, where 100% of students now qualify for free or reduced lunch—a sharp increase from 72% just two years ago.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges. Math proficiency is critically low across all grades, ranging from just 5% in 3rd grade to 20% in 6th grade—far below district and state averages. For example, only 5% of 3rd graders met math standards compared to 36% district-wide and 48% statewide. Eighth grade performance is especially weak, with just 4% proficient in social studies and 14% in science. The school's overall state ranking has fallen to the 11th percentile, its lowest point in a decade. There is one notable bright spot: 5th grade science has outperformed the district average in three of the past four years, with 36% proficient in the most recent year. Chronic absenteeism is also a concern, affecting 27% of students—more than five times the rate at nearby Museum School Avondale Estates (5%) and DeKalb Arts Academy (4%).

The contrast with these two neighboring K-8 charter schools is striking. Museum School Avondale Estates ranks in the 82nd percentile statewide with math proficiency of 50-75%, while DeKalb Arts Academy ranks in the 61st percentile with math proficiency of 28-63%. Both serve similar grade spans and geographic areas, yet achieve dramatically better outcomes. Per-student spending at DeKalb Prep has jumped 67% over two years to $18,036, yet academic results have not improved correspondingly. While the school outperforms the lowest-performing nearby traditional schools like Snapfinger Elementary and Peachcrest Elementary, it trails schools like Allgood Elementary. For families, the data suggests a school at a crossroads, serving a high-needs population with pockets of instructional strength but facing systemic challenges in academics and attendance.

Open Quote As an educator who has taught at this school, I would hope that every parent will take a hard look at these numbers. These are the very telling statistics! I has to leave the school because of some unethical grading policies as well as testing issues that were taking place and refused to be caught in a scandal. I am even thinking about sending the news to the school to possibly investigate some of the concerning truths about teachers and faculty members. My heart beaks for the students and the family who have entrusted the safety and education with there children. Close Quote
