Summary

DeKalb Preparatory Academy Charter is a public charter school serving grades K-8 in Decatur, Georgia, within the DeKalb County School District. Despite being a charter school, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Georgia elementary schools, with academic performance significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas.

For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts at DeKalb Preparatory Academy Charter ranged from just 13% (3rd grade) to 34% (5th grade), compared to 29.1%-43% for DeKalb County and 34.9%-43% for the state. In mathematics, the proficiency rates were even lower, ranging from 5.2% (6th grade) to 20% (5th grade), compared to 22.8%-34.5% for DeKalb County and 37.3%-49% for the state. This underperformance is particularly concerning given that DeKalb Preparatory Academy Charter serves a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 72.06% to 83.1% over the past few years.

Interestingly, the nearby traditional public elementary schools, such as Snapfinger Elementary, Dunaire Elementary, and Rowland Elementary, which also serve high-need student populations, are outperforming DeKalb Preparatory Academy Charter on the Georgia Milestones assessments. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the charter school model in this particular context and highlights the importance of addressing the socioeconomic factors that can impact student learning and achievement.

Open Quote As an educator who has taught at this school, I would hope that every parent will take a hard look at these numbers. These are the very telling statistics! I has to leave the school because of some unethical grading policies as well as testing issues that were taking place and refused to be caught in a scandal. I am even thinking about sending the news to the school to possibly investigate some of the concerning truths about teachers and faculty members. My heart beaks for the students and the family who have entrusted the safety and education with there children. Close Quote
