Summary

Cleveland Road Elementary School is a small, high-poverty school in Bogart, GA, serving 256 students in grades PK–5 as part of the Clarke County district. The school has made a remarkable turnaround over the past several years, climbing from the bottom fifth of Georgia elementary schools to the top half of the state—a story that stands out among its peers.

One of the most impressive achievements at Cleveland Road is its dramatic reduction in chronic absenteeism. The rate has fallen from 24.5% in 2021-2022 to just 8.3% in 2025-2026—less than one-third of the district rate (26.8%) and less than half the state rate (17.7%). This is especially notable given that 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a demographic where high absenteeism is common. The school also excels in 3rd grade math, with 55.3% proficiency in 2025-2026, beating both the district (44.7%) and state (48.3%) averages. Science performance is another strength, with 5th graders posting 42.1% proficiency, well above the district's 33%. The school's improvement is broad-based: female, male, and African American student subgroups all rank within the 51st–54th percentile, showing that gains are shared equitably across the student body.

Compared to nearby schools, Cleveland Road stands out for its resource investment. It spends $30,137 per student—more than double the spending at affluent Oconee County schools like Dove Creek ($14,110) or Rocky Branch ($12,655)—and maintains a low 8:1 student-teacher ratio. While those Oconee schools rank in the 94th–96th percentile, Cleveland Road's trajectory suggests sustained investment is paying off. Among its Clarke County peers, it ranks 2nd in state standing, behind Johnnie Lay Burks (213th) and ahead of Whitehead Road (586th), Oglethorpe Avenue (734th), and Bettye Henderson Holston (1,200th). A persistent challenge remains 4th grade math, where proficiency dropped to 22.2% in 2025-2026, well below state averages—an area to watch as the school continues its upward climb.

Open Quote I did like CRES but over the years it has change a lot. It is not what it used to be. There is not a lot of parent involvement activities like when my kids where younger. I feel like the minorities are not credited for the good academic n behavior achievements. When we have activities to participate the awards always go to the majority kids. I feel as a parent that my daughter is so bright but she doesn't get the credited she deserves at CRES. My daughter this school year 2018 hasn't received any awards for her academics achievements. CRES needs to credited students for their academic n behavior accomplishments. It lacks that a lot. Close Quote
