Summary

Ellis Elementary School in Savannah, GA, serves 419 students in grades PK through 8 and is part of the Savannah-Chatham County district, earning a 2-star rating and ranking in the 46th percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year.

One of the most striking things about Ellis is its students' attendance. Only 6.1% of students are chronically absent, which is dramatically lower than the district average of 16.6% and the state average of 17.7%. This is a consistent strength—the rate has never exceeded 9.1% over the past five years. Nearby schools like Haven Elementary School (29.4%), Andrea B Williams Elementary School (24.2%), and Hodge Elementary School (21.7%) all have chronic absenteeism rates more than three times higher. Ellis also serves a more economically diverse student body, with 41.5% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, compared to over 95% at several neighboring schools. This mix of strong attendance and economic diversity gives Ellis a unique profile in the local landscape.

Academically, Ellis shows a fascinating pattern: its middle school grades are a clear standout. In 2025-2026, 8th-grade math proficiency hit 64.6% (vs. 31.7% district), science reached 51.6% (vs. 22.7% district), and social studies hit 48.4% (vs. 26.4% district). This upward trend is consistent—the previous year also showed strong 8th-grade results. In contrast, elementary grades are more mixed, with 3rd-grade math at 51.1% but dropping to 25% by 5th grade. While nearby Savannah Classical Academy Charter School outperforms Ellis in most subjects, Ellis achieves its results with lower spending per student ($22,316 vs. $24,894). For parents, this suggests a school where students may experience significant academic growth as they move into the upper grades, making it a potentially strong choice for families looking for a neighborhood school with a proven middle school program.

Open Quote Ellis (Charles Ellis Montessori Academy) has recently become an application only school. It's an old school, very charming. My children have been going for 3 years now. They embrace all of the cultures that are a part of the school and include plenty of opportunities for the school community to get together. I chose to apply for Ellis after learning about the Montessori way of learning. Close Quote
