Summary

Central High School in Macon, GA, serves approximately 892 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Bibb County School District, where about 55% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most striking thing about Central High is its graduation rate. At 96.5% for two consecutive years, it far outpaces the district average of 89.0% and the state average of 87.2%. It also beats every nearby high school, including Howard High (88.5%), Rutland High (90.4%), and Westside High (84.7%). The dropout rate is also low at 1.4%, well below the state's 2.4%. This tells parents that Central is very effective at keeping students engaged and on track to earn a diploma. The school also stands out for its support of special education students, ranking in the 34th percentile statewide for that group—better than its overall academic ranking.

Academically, the picture is more mixed. While test scores generally trail state averages, Biology is a clear relative strength. In 2024–2025, 39.1% of Central students scored proficient on the Biology End-of-Course assessment, nearly matching the state average of 44.2% and leading all Bibb County high schools. Algebra I proficiency improved from 15.2% to 20.2%, though it remains far below the state's 48.1%. One challenge is chronic absenteeism, which sits at 32.6%—nearly double the state average, though better than several nearby schools like Westside High (47.1%) and Northeast High (42.8%). With a favorable student-teacher ratio of 15.4:1 and per-student spending of $14,706, Central invests solidly in its students. The school's biggest strength is clearly getting students to graduation, even as it works to boost academic proficiency across subjects.

Open Quote I love Central High School. I love the students and my fellow faculty who sincerly care about their studetns. As much as I would like to score higher I cannot. The teachers are overleoaded with uncesssary work that is said to help learning but in actuality lowers the quality of our classrooms because of the excessive burdens emposed. They would see a remarkable improvment in student performance and teacher satisfaction if they simply backed off of their teachers and let them do what they have already been trained to do.
