Summary

Yargo Elementary School in Winder, GA, serves approximately 782 students in Pre-K through 5th grade within the Barrow County School District. The school has seen a significant shift in its academic standing over the past decade, moving from a mid-tier performer to its current position in the bottom quintile of Georgia elementary schools.

In the most recent testing cycle, Yargo's math proficiency rates trail both district and state averages at every grade level. For example, 5th grade math proficiency stands at 22.5%, compared to 51.8% at Bethlehem Elementary and 47.2% at Bramlett Elementary. The 5th grade science score of 15.8% is particularly low—less than half the district average and roughly one-third of the state average. Notably, Yargo's 4th grade math performance (38.0%) is stronger than both its 3rd and 5th grade results, suggesting a possible area of strength to build upon. The school's ranking has dropped sharply in just two years, from the 40th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 17th percentile in 2025-2026.

There are some positive signs. Yargo's chronic absenteeism rate of 15.2% is below both the district (17.0%) and state (17.7%) averages, and the school maintains a student-teacher ratio of 12.6:1. However, per-student spending of $15,068 is the lowest among comparable Barrow County schools—for instance, Auburn Elementary spends $18,228 and Winder Elementary spends $17,809. When compared to demographically similar schools, Yargo still lags: Kennedy Elementary achieves 47.7% proficiency in 3rd grade math versus Yargo's 30.2%. While spending has increased 32.6% over three years, these investments have not yet translated into improved outcomes, leaving questions about what targeted interventions might help reverse the current trend.

Open Quote This school is beyond horrible!!! No communication at all. The teachers could care less about a students success. They stress kids about apt meetings only school I have seen do this. The meetings are unnecessary and they schedule every grade on a different night and the meeting is 1 and 15 minutes to a hour and a half. The drag their feet when it comes to testing or IEPs. It took them 4 months to complete my childs testing and gave an IEP two weeks before school ended. Which needed to be revised within the first month and half of the next year. I just have nothing good to say about the school. They ignore any and all problems and the school board does the same. The school board is not any better than the school. A lot of parents have moved out of this area because of the schools and the types of people living around here. While it looks like a nice area. There is a lot of racism and hate that goes on in this area/county and people teach the same to their kids. There is also a lot of drug addicts in this area. I do not recommend the schools or buying a property in this county! Close Quote
