Summary

Oak Hill Middle School in Milledgeville, GA, serves 974 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Baldwin County School District, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Oak Hill has shown meaningful progress in recent years, particularly with chronic absenteeism dropping from 25.1% to 15.1%—now better than both the district and state averages. The school also shows a notable strength in Algebra I, where proficiency has historically exceeded the district average, though scores have been volatile year-to-year. In 2025-2026, 25.4% of students scored proficient in Algebra I, compared to the district's 19.3%. However, 8th grade science remains a significant challenge, with only 7.3% proficiency versus the state's 29.7%. Interestingly, students taking advanced HS Physical Science perform much better, with 31.8% proficiency. The school's overall ranking has improved modestly from the 11th percentile to the 18th percentile statewide over the past several years.

When compared to nearby schools, the differences are stark. Gray Station Middle School, just 16 miles away in Jones County, ranks at the 81st percentile with 100% Algebra I proficiency—but only 36.78% of its students qualify for free/reduced lunch. A more apt comparison is Putnam County Middle School, which also serves a 100% free/reduced lunch population yet outperforms Oak Hill across nearly every subject, including 94.4% Algebra I proficiency. Putnam County spends more per student ($15,472 vs. $12,742) and has a slightly lower student-teacher ratio. Wilkinson County Middle School, 18 miles away, achieves 30.8% science proficiency—more than four times Oak Hill's rate. These comparisons suggest that while Oak Hill faces significant challenges tied to poverty, additional resources and instructional strategies could help close the achievement gap.

Open Quote This place is terrible. My son went here, within the first 3 days he got covid. The school did not care and kept forwarding my wife and I to other people to explain it to. After his quarantine was we were told he had to come back to school. He went back and within a week he had covid again. Come to find out he was testing positive the entire time since he first was exposed. The school did not care nor contacted us. I just received a call yesterday and it had been over A MONTH since he had been at that school, "claiming they were concerned about my son's absences, and they had to turn it over to a truancy officer. IT TOOK THESE PEOPLE A MONTH to contact us about my son missing school.... My wife and I had already emailed the board of education to let them know we were going to homeschool our son instead of sending him back to this incompetent school. Literally nobody knows what they're doing except one of my sons computer teachers. If your child caught covid, these folks are playing ignorant and acting like they doing know what kids are getting it and DEFINITELY aren't telling the parents when there children are exposed! If your kid goes here and you don't have another option im very sorry. If you do have another option, I would take it as fast as possible. Close Quote
