Middle Schools in Walker County

Walker County is home to three middle schools—LaFayette Middle School, Chattanooga Valley Middle School, and Rossville Middle School—all serving grades 6-8 with enrollments between 446 and 499 students in a predominantly high-poverty area (95-100% free/reduced lunch).

Chattanooga Valley Middle School is the clear standout, earning a 3-star rating and ranking in the 61st percentile statewide. It outperforms both district and state averages in nearly every subject, with particularly impressive 8th-grade results: 43.6% proficient in science (vs. 29.7% statewide) and 46.4% in social studies (vs. 40.2% statewide). It also has the lowest chronic absenteeism rate (23.5%) and spends the least per student ($15,771), proving that effective instruction matters more than raw funding. LaFayette Middle School shows a mixed picture—its overall ranking is modest (42nd percentile), but it demonstrates remarkable growth in math, improving from 21.6% proficiency in 6th grade to 43.7% in 8th grade, nearly matching the state average. It also reports 100% proficiency in high school physical science for a small group of 8th graders, indicating advanced coursework opportunities. Rossville Middle School is the most concerning, with its ranking plummeting from the 37th percentile in 2023-2024 to just the 17th percentile now (1-star rating). For parents, Chattanooga Valley offers the strongest overall education, LaFayette shows promise in math, and Rossville faces significant challenges that warrant close attention.
