Middle Schools in Marietta City

Marietta City is home to two middle schools—Marietta Middle School (grades 7–8, 1,352 students) and Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (grade 6 only, 678 students)—serving roughly 2,030 students in a district ranked 44th out of 201 in Georgia with a 4-star rating.

The two schools offer very different academic profiles. Marietta Middle School excels in advanced coursework: 99.2% of its Algebra I students and 93.4% of its HS Physical Science students are proficient, far outpacing state averages (48.1% and 60.9%, respectively). However, grade-level performance is more modest—just 43.7% of 7th graders and 48.0% of 8th graders are proficient in math, and only 36.5% are proficient in 8th-grade science. By contrast, Marietta Sixth Grade Academy shows a standout 54.2% proficiency in 6th-grade math, a remarkable 14.2-point jump from the prior year and well above the state’s 40.7%. Chronic absenteeism also favors the Sixth Grade Academy at 13.3%, versus 19.5% at Marietta Middle. Both schools serve similar economically disadvantaged populations (65–68% free/reduced lunch) and spend about $17,500–$18,000 per student with favorable 12–13:1 student-teacher ratios.

For parents, the key takeaway is that Marietta Middle School offers an exceptional advanced-track experience—its Algebra I and Physical Science results are among the best in the state—but grade-level proficiency remains a work in progress. The school’s state ranking has improved steadily, from 219th in 2023-2024 to 174th in 2025-2026. Marietta Sixth Grade Academy provides a strong math foundation and better attendance, making it a solid transition year. Both schools mirror district averages closely, which is expected since they are the only two middle schools in the district.
