Summary:

Cherokee County is home to seven middle schools serving grades 6-8, all of which are relatively large (enrollments from 929 to 1,675 students) and collectively rank among the top districts in Georgia with a 4-star rating.

For parents, the standout academic leader is Dean Rusk Middle School, which holds the district's only 5-star rating and ranks 58th statewide. It posts the highest 8th-grade math scores (71.8% proficient) and leads in 8th-grade Social Studies. Creekland Middle School is the consistent performer, ranking 64th with the lowest free/reduced lunch rate (21.62%) and the highest 7th-grade math proficiency (63.7%). Woodstock Middle School is the most improved, jumping 97 spots over two years to rank 74th, and now leads the district in 8th-grade science (49.8%). Mill Creek Middle School (ranked 77th) has the lowest chronic absenteeism rate (8.4%) and the strongest 6th-grade math scores (56.8%). Freedom Middle School (92nd) and E. T. Booth Middle School (102nd) round out the top tier, while Teasley Middle School (233rd) trails significantly, particularly in 6th-grade math (29.1% proficient).

Across the district, advanced coursework results are exceptional—Algebra I proficiency ranges from 96.9% to 100%, and HS Physical Science from 86.7% to 100%, far exceeding state averages. Chronic absenteeism is low district-wide (10.2% vs. 17.7% statewide), and every school outperforms state averages in most subjects. Notably, higher spending does not predict better outcomes: Woodstock spends the most per student ($14,499) yet ranks mid-pack, while Dean Rusk spends the least ($12,086) and ranks first. This data release does not include English Language Arts scores; those results arrive in December.
