Open Quote Caring, nurturing, and intellectual teachers and staff ensure each student's success. Everyone knows your child by name at the school. They are all vested in your child, regardless of how long the student has attended Canterbury. Very family-oriented school community! Canterbury has it all - strong academics, sports, character development, clubs, Homecoming, etc. My child was more than prepared for college, which made the transition seamless. Close Quote

Open Quote If you are looking for a school that fosters academic excellence as well as character education, then look at Canterbury School of Florida. My children are both at the lower campus however, the students I see that are in the upper campus (middle and high school) and whom have graduated from Canterbury possess positive social skill sets that will carry them over to adulthood. Furthermore, the amount of parent/friends who have had their own children graduate from Canterbury and move on to top universities .. many with various forms of academic scholarships only signify to me that my husband and I made the right decision in enrolling our kids at Canterbury. Open Quote An amazing school which focuses on the development of the whole child in helping to mold and shape them into the adults we want them to be.

The preschool and elementary school experience is incredible for the child. The children are involved in learning through so many different experiences, like the Steam Garden and Marine Studies, which trigger the joy of learning from the very beginning of their education.

Into middle school and high school, the education is not only through rigorous academics, but also through strong character building, resulting in a well-rounded experience, which makes me happy and feel as though I made the right decision for my child. But, even more importantly, my child is happy in his experience and is excited to go to school and interact with his fellow students and the amazing faculty and staff every day. As my son says, the only thing that is missing is Canterbury College because he never wants to leave.

The community is very welcoming and we found our home within it. This community is not only for the children, but the whole family, and we are forever thankful we chose Canterbury. Close Quote

Open Quote When searching for middle and high schools, we knew we wanted a environment that fostered more of a individualized education. We found that and so much more at Canterbury School of Florida! Excellent academics, incredible college preparation, great college counseling, teachers who know your child well beyond just their name and grades. The small class sizes allow the teachers to give more individualized attention while having open, ongoing communication with the parents. The class trips are amazing! Trips focus on self reflection while team building at the same time. The skills learned prepare them for after graduation, college, and future jobs. And then there is the athletics! The opportunities to participate in sports starting in middle school are beyond anything I have seen. The athletic department focuses on character development, a we is greater than me mentality, all while developing the skills needed to play at a state championship level. All of this while having fun! Canterbury has opened up doors for my children in academics and athletics that we could not imagine even existed. As parents, we have made lifelong friends that I could not ever put a price on. Our gratitude to Canterbury School of Florida is beyond measure. Close Quote

Open Quote Our three daughters are attending Canterbury with our oldest graduating this May 2012. She is so prepared for college! Academically she was challenged. Athletically she was trained to her fullest potential. And she was given social skills that will carry her through life productively. All of these were reinforced at home. The grass is never greener on the other side you must water your own grass and that is exactly what the teachers, administration and parents do for our children. The encouragement and guidance is consistent. The education level is high and intertwined between subjects with many hands on activities. The glue to this school is parent association and communication between faculty and administration. The only draw back that my daughters say is the student body is small. Maybe another 300 hundred students would help in that area but any more than that and I think Canterbury will loose its edge over all other schools. This is one great school where the kids can grow in confidence!

Open Quote I have 2 sons at Canterbury, one at the upper campus and one at the lower. Both are receiving a first class education. The school manages to find the perfect balance between academic excellence and development of the whole person.

We came from London to Saint Petersburg and one of the deciding factors in our decision to make the move was how impressed we were with Canterbury. The school has continued to exceed our expectation since joining 2 years ago.
We will be sending our 3 youngest sons to Canterbury as soon as they are old enough.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Canterbury School of Florida to other families. Close Quote

Open Quote Our son has been at Canterbury for four years. We will be starting our daughter there in Pre-K. The elementary school is a warm inviting place where parents are able to participate on many levels, but of course "Flag" is what really sets the lower campus apart. We noticed a huge developmental leap in our son's maturity as a student when he went into fifth grade at the upper campus. He stepped up his game on homework and took pride in the fact that he had a locker, a schedule in different rooms and had the opportunity to be involved in several extra curricular activities. The staff is wonderful and good at communicating with parents. I feel like he is being challenged based on the amount of homework and the complexity of the assignments. Since 3rd grade, it is expected that written reports will include public speaking presentations. Our son is participating in baseball, football and has already gotten certified for scuba diving so he can try out for the Cousteau Foundation/Canterbury Marine Studies dive club. He has also had the chance to take some amazing class trips every year, including camping trips. As parents, we have enjoyed a school environment where you get to know the students and the families that our child is growing up with. We transferred from another private school in the area and feel like we really did our homework. I would highly recommend Canterbury School of Florida. Close Quote

Open Quote One of the keys to this school is their ability to integrate the enrichment programs to the overall curriculum. For example, when the students are studying the US states and capitals in geography, they are singing about states in music ("Fifty, Nifty, United States"), constructing building replicas of Washington, D.C. in art, reading the Oregon Trail and learning to spell the states and capitals. The curriculum is interrelated and allows the students to understand and assimilate the topic in several ways, which reinforces their learning as well as different learning types. It really makes it fun for the kids.

I tease my daughter and ask: "Did you do any work today at school?" And her answer, "Oh no, Mom, we just had fun." It is a joke, of course, because I see the quality of the "work" she is doing every day. There is a parent portal which describes homework projects, enrichment activities, and shows some completed assignments. I even get a notice with her score after she takes a reading test. It is amazing to feel so connected to her all day long.

In addition, the expectations set are high, not only for academics but for behavior as well. When my daughter sees others behaving to a high standard, she follows suit and it becomes second nature. Within a week of attending, she actually started running ahead to open doors for others.

We made the right choice for our daughter; she is engaged academically, socially and physically by the curriculum at Canterbury. The school is a great size for individual attention with a family atmosphere. Close Quote

Open Quote As a parent of two children on the lower campus, I cannot say enough great things about the quality of education our children are receiving. The small, nurturing environment along with the dedicated staff and use of technology, is exactly what has allowed our children to sore academically. The school is also preparing students to be productive and caring members of community and teach these lessons through the Canterbury Advisory Program or CAP. What truly makes Canterbury a special place is the tight knit community and the support that we give to each other and to each other's children. Close Quote

Open Quote Both my kids have been at Canterbury since PreK and they are excelling both academically and socially. My son has been able to participate in all-school musical productions on the Knowlton (Middle/Upper School campus) and it has been great for his confidence. My daughter has received the free extra reading help she needed which is provided by the school's on-staff Learning Specialist who helps with all learning needs. The community feel at Canterbury cannot be beat. Students and parents support each other. The school's motto is "Our students speak for themselves" and they really do, both literally and figuratively. Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
