Summary

Indian River Elementary School in Edgewater, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 614 students in grades PK through 5 within the Volusia County School District, and it has earned a consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade, indicating a reliable educational environment.

Indian River Elementary shows a clear academic split: its 5th Grade Science scores are a standout success, with 80% of students proficient in 2025-2026, outperforming the district and state averages by a wide margin. However, 3rd Grade Math is a persistent weakness, with only 54% of students proficient—12 points below both the district and state averages. This is a significant gap compared to nearby top performers like Sweetwater Elementary (91% proficiency) and Coronado Beach Elementary (87% proficiency). On a positive note, 5th Grade Math has shown strong improvement, rising from 51% to 72% proficiency over two years, suggesting effective instruction in upper grades that could be a model for earlier grades.

Indian River is the lowest-ranked school among its immediate geographic peers in Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach, with most nearby schools earning 4-star or 5-star ratings. Interestingly, its closest neighbor, Edgewater Public School, spends significantly more per student ($15,062 vs. $10,870) but ranks slightly lower, showing that higher spending doesn't always guarantee better outcomes. The school's chronic absenteeism rate of 25.5% is better than the district average but higher than top-performing schools like Sweetwater (13.2%), suggesting a potential area for improvement. While Indian River provides a solid education, especially in science, it faces challenges in early-grade math and needs to address attendance to close the performance gap with higher-ranked schools in the region.

Open Quote Huge parent involvement. All my sons teachers have been amazing. We are pleased overall but wish there was more advanced skills taught and nutrition education. PTA events are fun but they sell junk...soda...chips...little Debbie cakes :( ugh. I still love the school though. Close Quote
