Summary

Pine Trail Elementary School in Ormond Beach, FL, serves 737 students from Pre-K through 5th grade and is a consistently high-performing school within the Volusia County School District, earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for nine consecutive years and never ranking below the 74th percentile in the state over the past decade.

Pine Trail stands out for its exceptional academic performance, particularly in math, where 81% of 5th graders were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year compared to 62% in the district and state. The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 19.6%, dramatically lower than the district average of 34.1% and far below nearby schools like Holly Hill Elementary (47.9%) and Turie T. Small Elementary (45.0%). With 39.62% of students eligible for free/reduced lunch, Pine Trail has a lower rate of economic disadvantage compared to most nearby schools, such as Westside Elementary (83.85%) and Palm Terrace Elementary (81.78%). Interestingly, Pine Trail spends less per student ($10,293) than several lower-performing nearby schools, suggesting its success is driven by factors like strong family engagement and effective teaching rather than financial advantage.

Pine Trail operates in a competitive local environment, particularly with the nearby Ormond Beach Elementary School (96th percentile, 5-star), which creates a dynamic where Pine Trail is an excellent school but not the absolute top performer in its immediate area. A notable comparison is with Pathways Elementary School, located just 1.3 miles away on the same road, serving a similar student population with nearly identical free/reduced lunch rates (39.6% vs. 42.7%), yet Pine Trail consistently outperforms Pathways in nearly every subject and grade level. This highlights how school-level factors like leadership and school culture can create meaningful differences in academic outcomes, even among schools with similar demographics.

Open Quote When I moved here almost 5 years ago, I heard how great Pine Trail was... Two of my kids go there now, and it's just ok. There are some great teachers! But as a whole, I can only give it an average rating. There has been an increased effort to beef up security, which I totally understand. But an effort has been made to "encourage" parents to drop off kids instead of walking on campus. So if you want to walk your child to class, you must stand in line at the office, and wait your turn to get a pass, then return it before leaving. It's almost like the parents are being punished. And the parking, don't get me started! And the after school program is not that great either. But if you go off "test scores" alone, it's a good school. Close Quote
