Summary

Osceola Elementary School is a PK-5 public school in St. Augustine, FL, serving 639 students as part of the highly-rated St. Johns County School District, which ranks in the 94th percentile statewide.

Osceola stands out from nearby schools due to its high level of economic disadvantage, with over 65% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch—the second-highest rate among its St. Johns County peers. This context is crucial for understanding its performance. The school has a solid, mid-tier history, consistently earning 3 or 4 stars over the past decade, though its state ranking has been volatile, peaking at the 78th percentile in 2024-2025 before dropping to the 70th percentile for 2025-2026. A key differentiator is chronic absenteeism: 26.7% of students were chronically absent in 2023-2024, which is 6.6 percentage points higher than the district average and 12.3 points higher than nearby high-performing schools like R. B. Hunt Elementary School (14.3%) and W. Douglas Hartley Elementary (14.4%). This persistent issue, hovering around 25% for four years, is a major headwind for academic achievement.

Academically, Osceola shows a distinct pattern of strong foundational skills in 3rd grade that fade by 5th grade. For example, in 2025-2026, 3rd grade math proficiency was 78% (nearly matching the district's 79%), but 5th grade math dropped to 71% (6 points below the district). Similarly, 3rd grade ELA was 73% proficient (5 points below the district), while 5th grade ELA fell to 66% (11 points below). This "fade-out" effect is more pronounced than at top-performing schools like R.B. Hunt, where 5th graders outperform 3rd graders. Interestingly, Osceola spends significantly more per student ($13,818) than higher-performing peers like R.B. Hunt ($10,466) and Otis A. Mason Elementary School ($11,005), raising questions about how resources are allocated. The school's performance is a testament to its staff's hard work, achieving above state averages despite these challenges.

Open Quote If you want your kid to keep good grades remove them or don't enroll them, my kid went from an A-B to Ds and Fs. Seems to be how they want it too, they do not handle issues and look at you like you are the issue. The also seem to bully your kid when on one around. If they do look into the issue they seem to find they staff to be doing as they should. Close Quote
