Summary

James A. Webster Elementary School is a public school in St. Augustine, FL, serving 586 students in grades PK-5 as part of the highly-rated St. Johns County School District. This school stands out from its neighbors due to its high rate of economic disadvantage, with about 71% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch—significantly higher than the average of nearby schools like R. B. Hunt Elementary School (29%) and W. Douglas Hartley Elementary (around 48%). Despite these challenges, Webster has shown steady academic improvement, climbing from the 18th percentile statewide in 2019 to the 35th percentile in 2025, though it still trails the district's top performers.

A key challenge is chronic absenteeism, which affects nearly 25% of Webster students—far above the 14% rate at nearby W. Douglas Hartley Elementary and R. B. Hunt Elementary. This issue directly impacts learning, as students who miss significant school time struggle to keep up. On a positive note, Webster invests heavily in its students, spending $14,142 per pupil—about 35% more than R. B. Hunt Elementary—which funds smaller class sizes (12.4:1 student-teacher ratio) and extra support. A bright spot is 4th-grade math, where 70% of students were proficient in 2024-2025, nearly matching the district average and well above the state average.

Interestingly, Webster outperforms the St. Augustine Public Montessori School in most subjects, despite Montessori having a much lower poverty rate (5%). This suggests Webster's traditional approach and targeted resources provide a stable foundation. For parents, the school's upward trajectory and dedicated investment in student support are encouraging, but addressing absenteeism remains the most critical step for continued improvement. The school is a work in progress, but it is clearly moving in the right direction.

Open Quote This school was built in the same year I was born. I also attended this school as a child, it was then Webster 6th grade Center. I met many new kids and teachers. I have so many great memories from this school. I was blessed to have known Mr. Webster, former principle. I had many teachers to mentor, teach and guide me through these turbulent years. I still ride by to see the school after all these years. It's not the prettiest school and never was But is still one of the best schools in St. Johns County. How blessed we are to have such great teachers to mentor and LOVE our children. The old saying still goes "you can't judge a book by it's cover." I encourage you to open that book and allow your children to go on that adventure to dream and imagine. Allow them to be exposed to the nothing missing nothing broken children as we are all different yet still all the same. PEACE and LOVE TO YA! Close Quote
