Summary

Island Village Montessori School is a public charter school in Venice, FL, serving 527 students from Kindergarten through 8th grade within the highly-ranked Sarasota County School District. This school stands out for its unique academic trajectory, particularly in mathematics, where students show remarkable growth from elementary to middle school. While early elementary math scores (3rd-5th grade) may lag behind nearby schools like Ashton Elementary School and Taylor Ranch Elementary School, Island Village students surge ahead by 7th and 8th grade, often exceeding both district and state averages. Most impressively, 100% of students taking Algebra 1 and Geometry End-of-Course exams achieved proficiency, far surpassing the district average of 70% and outperforming even its closest neighbor, Laurel Nokomis School (91% Algebra 1 proficiency).

The Montessori approach at Island Village fosters deep conceptual understanding that pays off in later years, making it an excellent choice for families seeking a K-8 school that can nurture a child's mathematical talents. Middle school performance is consistently strong across subjects, with 6th grade English Language Arts proficiency at 75% (district: 69%) and 7th grade math at 73% (district: 74%). This contrasts sharply with Imagine School At Palmer Ranch, another local charter that struggles with low test scores and a 37.1% chronic absenteeism rate. Island Village's spending of $11,923 per student is efficient compared to traditional schools like Venice Elementary School ($18,034), though Sarasota Suncoast Academy achieves similar results at $9,638 per student.

However, families should be aware of a significant weakness: chronic absenteeism. While improving from 31.9% (2022-2023) to 21.0% (2023-2024), this rate remains above the district average of 20.1% and is notably higher than nearby high-performing schools like Ashton (13.9%) and Taylor Ranch (17.3%). The school's overall performance has been resilient, recovering strongly from a dip in 2024-2025 to earn a 3-star rating in 2025-2026. For parents who value a Montessori education that emphasizes student-directed learning and mixed-age classrooms, and who are willing to support consistent attendance, Island Village offers a compelling option with exceptional advanced math outcomes and a proven ability to develop deep mathematical thinkers.

Open Quote This school is the worst school I've ever been too. I regret the day that I ever came to this school. I went to island village Montessori from Venice middle and Venice Middle is A LOT better...I used to be able to know many countries and famous people before I came to this school but I forgot it all... We do have projects about the things like that, but you only have so much time to learn about them like maybe a few days but less then a week, so you forget about it quicker than usual... Im still in this school and every day I wish I could go back to Venice Middle... Please dont go to this School... Close Quote

Open Quote My child has been at Island Village Montessori since he was in preschool. The school had its challenges in the beginning as a new school (2001) but has grown into a strong Montessori program. Compared to other private Montessori schools in which we’ve been a part, this free program is a jewel. My son is now in the middle school and loves it! He is doing well using the “contract” system and with the guidance of a strong team of teachers, he is also learning how to plan his time and take responsibility for his learning. He makes “A”s and “B”s on his report card although I think it is more important that he is becoming a well-rounded learner and enjoys learning. I also appreciate how hard the faculty work to provide many other learning opportunities and activities . . . seacamp, field trips, hands-on studios, 8th-grade trip to Philadelphia, festivals, music performances, and involvement in many community events. They also have a deep connection to their families and always seem to be organizing some special event to help others in need. By the way, I have another child who graduated from the program and has transitioned beautifully into a traditional system. I highly recommend! Close Quote
