Summary

Pinewood Elementary School in Eagle Lake, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 740 students in grades PK-5 within the Polk district, where nearly 73% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Pinewood’s biggest challenge is math, where proficiency rates (48% in 3rd, 41% in 4th, 56% in 5th) fall well below state averages. This is a stark contrast to nearby Frank E. Brigham Academy, just 2.89 miles away, which posted math scores of 92%, 88%, and 78% for the same grades. Even John Snively Elementary, less than a mile away, outperforms Pinewood in 3rd-grade math (64% vs. 48%). However, Pinewood shows a relative strength in English Language Arts (ELA), with scores (53%, 56%, 53%) matching or exceeding the district average. This creates a unique profile where reading is competitive but math lags—unlike Chain Of Lakes Elementary, which excels in both subjects, or Eagle Lake Elementary, which struggles in both.

Despite a low star rating, Pinewood is on an upward trajectory, with consistent year-over-year test score improvements from 2023-2024 to 2025-2026. Science is a bright spot: 5th-grade proficiency jumped from 37% to 55%, well above the district average of 49%. Chronic absenteeism (32.9%) is a concern but lower than many neighbors like Eagle Lake Elementary (46.5%) and Inwood Elementary (45.3%). Notably, per-student spending ($10,165) does not predict performance—Frank E. Brigham Academy spends more ($11,639) and achieves top results, while Eagle Lake Elementary spends $11,515 with lower outcomes. This suggests that how resources are used matters more than the amount.

Open Quote I have never been so appalled by a school in my life. Treated my daughter horribly and she is in 2nd grade. Teacher harassed her throughout the year, principle backed it up and protected the teacher instead of the student.

Bullies constantly throughout the year to both me and my daughter. My daughter has the top grade in her class, and the 2nd top grade for the entire 2nd grade. But she was withheld from going to multiple good behavior awards because the teacher deemed it so.

I had to call a meeting 4 or 5 times during the year in person because things couldn't be handled via their communication system. I got nasty emails and notes home constantly. All of which are documented and brought to the attention of the principals who did nothing. Called my daughter a liar she's 7.

Seriously something wrong with this school. Close Quote
