Summary

Tradewinds Middle School in Greenacres, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 816 students in grades 6 through 8 within the Palm Beach School District, where a majority of families qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically been low-performing, but recent data shows a promising upward trend, with its state ranking jumping to the 30th percentile—its best performance in years—driven by remarkable gains in advanced coursework and a notable reduction in chronic absenteeism.

The most striking feature of Tradewinds is its "tale of two math programs." The school excels at accelerating top students, achieving a 98% proficiency rate in Algebra 1 and 100% in Geometry, far exceeding district and state averages. However, on-grade-level math proficiency lags significantly, with only 42% of 7th graders and 47% of 6th graders meeting standards. This pattern is not unique to Tradewinds; nearby schools like Okeeheelee Middle School and Woodlands Middle School show similar gaps between advanced and general math performance. The closest neighbor, L C Swain Middle School, shares a similar demographic and low overall ranking, suggesting these challenges reflect the broader community. In contrast, the highest-performing nearby school is South Technical Preparatory Academy, a charter school that achieves higher proficiency with lower per-pupil spending, offering a potential blueprint for improvement.

Despite these challenges, Tradewinds is on an encouraging trajectory. The 2025-2026 school year saw double-digit gains in ELA, civics proficiency soaring from 44% to 81%, and 8th-grade science improving from 31% to 52%, now matching the state average. Chronic absenteeism, which peaked at 30.4%, is also declining. While the school spends $15,244 per student—more than top-performing peers like Christa McAuliffe Middle School—these recent improvements suggest that new interventions are beginning to pay off, making Tradewinds a school to watch for families seeking a community-focused option with a clear upward trend.
