Summary

Renaissance Charter At Crown Point is a K-8 charter school in Ocoee, FL, serving 1,290 students within the Orange school district, where over half of the student body comes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

This school presents a unique "two-tiered" academic profile. Its middle school students achieve exceptional results in high school-level courses, with 100% proficiency in both Geometry and Biology 1—far exceeding district and state averages. However, elementary math and science scores lag behind, with 5th-grade math proficiency at just 40% compared to the district's 64%. This creates a stark contrast with nearby Hope Charter, a top-performing K-8 school just over a mile away that consistently achieves 80-90% proficiency across all subjects. The school's overall state ranking has remained stable at a 2-star level for the past five years, indicating below-average performance compared to other Florida elementary schools.

On a positive note, Renaissance Charter has shown remarkable improvement in chronic absenteeism, dropping from a post-pandemic high of 37.8% to just 15.8%—less than half the district average of 35.2% and significantly better than nearby schools like Phillis Wheatley Elementary (34.3%). The school operates with a lean financial model, spending $8,498 per student with a student-teacher ratio of 18.1, which is higher than all surrounding schools. For comparison, the higher-performing William S Maxey Elementary spends 57% more per student and has a lower ratio of 15.3. This efficiency may contribute to the school's challenges in elementary grades, where smaller class sizes often support foundational skill development.

Open Quote Both of my boys did excellent at this school. One of my boys has an IEP and they went above and beyond to help him. Close Quote

Open Quote This Year was my sons first year attending and so far so good. The school does need to improve on the parent teacher communication. I felt a lot of things was last minute and everything is done online which is fine but not everyone is tech savvy, But its a good school Close Quote

Open Quote No sense of community. Child pick up takes over 45 minutes. Teachers talk to students with disrespect. Recess is taken away when children have "too much energy". Only given one day a week on play structure. No recess on Wednesdays. Office staff does not answer the phone or return phone messages. When a 5th grade teacher was absent, a 1st grade teacher was taken out of her classroom for four days. The 1st grade class did not have a substitute teacher but many other teachers revolved in and out of the classroom giving instructions. The class was chaos by the end of four days. Principal is nice guys but not a leader. High teacher turnover. Close Quote
