Summary

Econ River High Charter in Orlando, FL, is a small alternative-style high school serving 327 students in grades 7-12 within the Orange school district.

This school faces significant challenges that set it apart from nearby schools. The graduation rate is critically low at 44.9% for the 2024-2025 school year, which is less than half the district average of 92.7% and far below nearby schools like William R Boone High (98.7%) and Cornerstone Charter Academy High (100%). Chronic absenteeism is extremely high at 88.4%, meaning nearly 9 out of 10 students miss so much school they are considered chronically absent—more than double the rate of the next highest nearby school and over 2.5 times the district average. Academic proficiency rates are very low across all subjects; for example, only 9% of students are proficient in Algebra 1 compared to 63% statewide, and just 7% are proficient in 9th grade ELA versus 60% statewide. The student-to-teacher ratio is 36.3:1, which is exceptionally high for a school serving a high-needs population, while nearby schools with better outcomes have much lower ratios.

Despite these struggles, the school's state ranking has shown a slight upward trend over the past five years, moving from the 9th percentile to the 29th percentile. Per-student spending is $9,291, which is in the middle range compared to nearby schools, indicating that funding alone does not explain the performance challenges. The school's profile—serving grades 7-12 with low enrollment and extreme academic struggles—suggests it functions as an alternative or "last chance" program for students who have not succeeded in traditional settings. Nearby Chancery High Charter and Ucp Transitional Learning Academy Charter also serve highly at-risk populations, but Econ River's combination of low graduation rates and extremely low proficiency makes it the most comprehensively struggling school in its immediate vicinity.

Open Quote Principal is very sweet and humble, as is the assistant principal, my only problem is finding teachers with mental health backgrounds please...my daughter attends this school and sometimes she is so afraid to go everyday because of the math teacher she has here is very hostile and rude. I understand that the math teacher has to be this way with certain students but my child should not be one of them and my child should not be frightened to go to school every single day. That is hurting her education. Close Quote
