Summary

Pinar Elementary is a mid-sized public school in Orlando, FL, serving 342 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Orange school district, where a significant majority of families (66.67%) qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically ranked in the bottom half of Florida elementary schools, with recent data showing a drop to the 36th percentile (2 stars) for the 2025-2026 school year, a decline from the previous year's 48th percentile. This places it in a challenging position compared to its more successful neighbors.

One of the most striking differences is how Pinar Elementary compares to nearby schools. For example, Deerwood Elementary (1.82 miles away) and Hidden Oaks Elementary (1.37 miles away) consistently rank in the 70th-78th percentile (4 stars). In 3rd grade ELA, Pinar had 53% proficiency, while Hidden Oaks reached 81% and Deerwood 72%. In 5th grade math, Pinar's 40% proficiency lagged far behind Hidden Oaks' 80% and Deerwood's 58%. The school also struggles with extremely high chronic absenteeism at 32.9% (2023-2024), far exceeding rates at Vista Lakes Elementary (18.3%) and Deerwood (21.8%). Interestingly, Pinar spends more per student ($15,929) than many higher-performing neighbors, suggesting the challenges are not due to a lack of funding.

Despite these difficulties, there is a bright spot: Pinar Elementary shows a consistent strength in 5th grade science, with 63% proficiency in 2025-2026, above the state average of 60% and close to the district average of 67%. This has been a trend for three years, indicating that science instruction may be a relative strength to build upon. However, the school's overall trajectory is volatile and declining, with no clear upward trend. For families considering this school, it's important to note that while it serves a more disadvantaged population than its immediate neighbors, targeted efforts to address chronic absenteeism and improve core instruction in reading and math will be critical for future progress.

Open Quote My 1st grade grandson has learning disabilities and for the second year in a row at Pinear, my daughter has recently found out his IEP (for children with disabilities) has not been followed and he will not be going to second grade. In fact, she was told that he is doing kindergarten level work and she just found that out also. Needless to say, she is looking to move him to another school. One that will provide the special care he needs. He was suppose to be receiving occupational therapy the past two years and again, just recently found out he hasn't been getting it. His teacher's comments regarding him not being up to level is that he is only one child and she doesn't have time to work with him. The school gets extra money for children with disabilities so maybe they need to get her a helper! Close Quote
