Summary

Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School in Stuart, FL, serves 911 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Martin County School District, where 62% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Anderson Middle School presents a unique "two schools" dynamic. Students in advanced courses like Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology achieve exceptional proficiency rates of 90-100%, far exceeding state averages. However, the majority of students taking standard grade-level assessments struggle significantly, particularly in 8th-grade math, where only 18% are proficient compared to the state average of 61%. This creates a stark achievement gap within the same building. While nearby Hidden Oaks Middle School (4.33 miles away) consistently ranks in the 80th percentile, Anderson has dropped to a 1-star rating and the 30th percentile statewide over the past decade. The school's chronic absenteeism rate of 21.7% is better than the district average but remains stubbornly high, and its student-teacher ratio of 18.5 is the highest among Martin County peers.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. 7th-grade math stands out with a 68% proficiency rate, above the state average and competitive with higher-performing schools like Stuart Middle School (76%). This suggests that specific grade-level teams or instructional strategies are working and could be replicated. For parents, the key takeaway is that Anderson offers exceptional opportunities for students who qualify for advanced coursework, but families should be aware of the significant struggles in standard grade-level subjects, especially math, and the school's overall declining trajectory compared to nearby options like Hidden Oaks Middle School.

Open Quote This is the most unorganized school I have ever had my child enrolled in. The front desk staff never gives correct information when parents ask questions. There are not enough teachers to offer each pupil the electives that they desire. The teachers barely give out any homework. The books they are reading in 6th grade Language Arts class my child read in 4th grade. There is a big theft problem. A ridiculous dress code for boys. And on some days they leave the doors locked so the kids are waiting outside to enter without any teacher supervision. There is also a big absentee rate. Close Quote

Open Quote I am not happy with the way in which they handled graduation ceremony for the students of Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School. I feel their very strict dress rules for the ceremony has eliminated more than just my great nephew ( I am his Guardian) from attending. Two weeks ago when I checked I was advised the students could wear decent jeans and shoes with their t shirt that I purchased from the school and then when the day before graduation was told very adamantly if they did not wear black dress pants, dress shoes and dress belt with their graduation T-Shirt, which by the way was not an acceptable shirt to be worn with dress clothes, and I could not afford to purchase new clothes when he had perfectly nice jeans that would have looked very good with the T-Shirt they required they could not participate. I am sure there are other students whose parents can not afford the dress clothes, money does not grow on trees and in this time is more difficult than any other. I thought the graduation was to honor the students for their accomplishments but apparently it is more for the Staff and Administration to shine. I kept my great nephew out of school the last day because he could not attend the graduation ceremony! Close Quote
