Summary

Liberty Middle School in Ocala, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 1,171 students in grades 6-8, located in the southwestern part of the city within the Marion district. This school stands out as a reliable, above-average performer in a district that ranks in the bottom 10% of Florida, earning a 2-star rating and ranking in the 45th percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year. Its greatest strength is in advanced math: an impressive 82% of students are proficient in Algebra 1 and 96% in Geometry, far exceeding both district and state averages. Liberty also excels in 8th-grade science (53% proficient, matching the state average) and has a lower chronic absenteeism rate (26.8%) than every other middle school in the district, including Lake Weir Middle School (54.6%) and Fort King Middle School (46.3%).

However, Liberty has a critical weakness: only 24% of 7th graders are proficient in math, far below the state average of 53% and the lowest proficiency rate at the school. This stark contrast with its success in advanced math and 8th-grade math (70% proficient) suggests a potential curriculum gap in the standard 7th-grade math pathway. Nearby, Osceola Middle School is the top-performing middle school in the area, with a 3-star rating and 69th percentile rank, outperforming Liberty in nearly every subject. Liberty’s performance is notable given its higher percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch (48%) compared to Osceola (39%), showing the school is resilient despite economic challenges.

Liberty’s per-student spending ($10,347) and student-teacher ratio (18.2) are average for the district, indicating its success is driven by factors like school culture and instructional strategies rather than just resources. The school is also on an upward trend, improving from the 35th percentile in 2020-2021 to the 45th percentile in 2025-2026, while many nearby schools like Dunnellon Middle School have declined. For parents, Liberty offers a strong foundation in advanced math and science, with better attendance than peers, but the 7th-grade math weakness is a key area to investigate if your child is on the standard math track.

Open Quote The principal and her staff need to learn how to lead by example not do as I say not as I do they also need to stop telling the girls that they are in the wrong for taking up for their selves when the boys are being inappropriate also if they're going to enforce dress code for the students the staff needs to abide by the same dress code namely the principal Close Quote

Open Quote I cannot understand how this school is even considered a "school"!!! They have teachers, who are NOT qualified to teach! They steal money from minors and say it's for fund raising, without notification to parents!! They lack organization and communication, which is extremely important when running a "school"!! The principal wouldn't last 2 days in an A or B rated school!! I would NEVER recommend this school to ANYONE, and I will make sure to take this to every level I can. Close Quote
