Summary

Sunlake Academy Of Math And Sciences in Lutz, FL, is a K-8 charter school serving 984 students within the Hillsborough district, consistently ranking in the top 20% of Florida schools over the past seven years. This school stands out for its exceptional performance in advanced math and science End-of-Course (EOC) exams, with 100% of students proficient in Biology 1 and 93% proficient in both Algebra 1 and Geometry—scores that far exceed district and state averages. In elementary grades, Sunlake shows strong and consistent proficiency in English Language Arts (73-88%) and Math (74-90%) for 3rd through 5th graders, outperforming nearby schools like Lutz K-8 School and Learning Gate Community School in these foundational years.

However, Sunlake has a notable weakness in 8th-grade science, where only 37% of students were proficient, a sharp contrast to its 5th-grade science success (79%) and to nearby schools like Lutz Preparatory School (85%) and Learning Gate (73%). The school also experiences a typical "middle school math dip" in 6th and 7th grades, but recovers strongly in 8th grade with 96% math proficiency, largely due to high-performing students taking the Algebra 1 EOC. Sunlake achieves these results with a low per-student spending of $8,496, significantly less than other high-performing schools like McKitrick Elementary School ($10,504) and Maniscalco K-8 School ($13,515), indicating efficient resource use.

Chronic absenteeism at Sunlake is low at 16.2%, better than the district average of 31.3% and schools like Maniscalco K-8 (23.7%) and Lutz K-8 (24.0%), though not as low as Lutz Preparatory (8.4%). While Sunlake’s "Math and Science" focus is evident in elementary math and advanced courses, the persistent weakness in 8th-grade science suggests a gap in the middle school science curriculum. Compared to its elite neighbor, Lutz Preparatory, Sunlake is consistently outperformed in most subjects but serves a broader community with lower spending, making it a strong, efficient choice for families seeking high academic standards in a K-8 setting.

Open Quote If you feel lucky your child got a seat in this school, don't be fooled. This school doesn't have wait-list and never had. Almost 2 dozen employees and 5 dozen students left during this school year. Many classes went through number of teacher. The curriculum is a joke! Not even comparable to public schools. Brand new school changing the logo two years into school opening because they are all about money. Close Quote

Open Quote Great school in 2017-2018. The 2018-2019 school year has been a joke. Would not recommend this school to my worst enemy. Close Quote
