Summary

Hill Middle School in Tampa, FL, serves 820 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Hillsborough school district, a mid-sized district ranked 45th out of 70 in the state. The school has a moderate level of economic diversity, with 42.2% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, and has consistently performed as an average school over the past decade, currently earning a 2-star rating and ranking in the 45th percentile statewide.

Hill Middle School's most notable strength is its exceptional performance in advanced math, with Algebra 1 and Geometry End-of-Course exam proficiency rates far exceeding district and state averages—88% and 94% respectively in the latest year. However, this creates a "tale of two math programs": while advanced math thrives, grade-level math proficiency is inconsistent, with a critical and persistent weakness in 7th-grade math, where only 27% of students are proficient compared to 53% statewide. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism, with a rate of 35.2% that is higher than both the district and state averages. In civics, performance is a relative weakness, with 77% proficiency matching the state average but lagging behind top-performing nearby schools like Farnell Middle School (89%) and Martinez Middle School (96%).

Geographically, Hill Middle School sits in a highly polarized neighborhood, surrounded by some of the highest-performing middle schools in the state, such as Walker Middle Magnet School and Martinez Middle (both 5-star, 97th+ percentile), and some of the lowest-performing, like Buchanan Middle School and Sligh Middle School (both 1-star). Interestingly, Hill's per-student spending of $10,348 is higher than these top-performing schools, suggesting that its challenges—such as high absenteeism and the 7th-grade math slump—are not due to a lack of funding but may require targeted instructional and support strategies to close the gap with its high-achieving neighbors.

Open Quote Words can not explain how disgusting this school is. The administration is rude and disrespectful to teachers, parents, and students. Almost every faculty member is close minded with no respect for themselves or other. The students are the worst parent of this school. This school is in the heart of one of the best neighborhoods but the student act like they are from the middle of the hood. And some of them lie about their address and really do come from the hood with has a big part on others behavior there. This school is also not well kept, their are roaches and bugs everywhere, many students play disgusting pranks like put poop on the bathroom floor and hallway walls. The influence of other students also effect the quality of this school. Many students bring drugs and other dangers inside of this school and the faculty has no clue about it because the are too busy worrying about thing that do not need to be worried about. Honestly it doesn't get any worse than Ben Hill. Your child will hate everything about this school and you are better off putting them in a private school, or one of the actually good schools near Ben Hill such as Walker or Martinez Middle School. I am a student there and have been since the 6th grade, i am currently at the end of my 8th grade year, and i can tell you personally it is truly a horrible school. Close Quote
