Summary

Young Middle Magnet School is a small middle school in Tampa, FL, serving 307 students in grades 6-8 within the Hillsborough district, where over 75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

This school stands out for its exceptional performance in Algebra 1, with 100% of students proficient on the 2025-2026 EOC exam—far exceeding the district (63%) and state (63%) averages, as well as every nearby school. However, this success doesn't extend to the general student body, as 8th-grade math proficiency (63%) only slightly beats the state average (61%), and 7th-grade math has been a persistent weakness, with scores as low as 13% in recent years. The school also boasts a favorable student-teacher ratio of 17.5:1, lower than the average of 21.5 at nearby schools, and spends $14,974 per student—significantly more than most peers. Yet, despite this high investment, the school holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the 29th percentile statewide, raising questions about resource allocation. Chronic absenteeism is a critical issue, with a rate of 33.1% in 2023-2024, well above the district and state averages, and notably higher than top-performing neighbors like Wilson Middle School (16.0%) and Williams Middle Magnet School (13.6%).

Interestingly, Young Middle Magnet is located just 0.41 miles from Ferrell Middle Magnet School, yet their outcomes differ sharply—Ferrell holds a 3-star rating and 50th percentile rank, outperforming Young in nearly every subject, including a 99% Algebra 1 proficiency rate. This contrast highlights that the "Magnet" label doesn't guarantee uniform quality, and factors like school leadership or program focus likely play a role. For parents, Young offers a strong advanced math program and smaller class sizes, but the broader academic challenges and high absenteeism suggest it may be best suited for families who can actively support their child's learning and attendance.

Open Quote My son transferred to Young from another county, where he was a straight-A student, always at the top of the Accelerated Reading program and was socially and scholastically active. Within a week of starting at Young Middle Magnet School his ever-positive attitude about school changed 180 degrees. His enthusiasm and curiosity were replaced by fear and anxiety, and he was bullied on a daily basis. We had numerous conversations with teachers, guidance and principal Johnson, all to no avail. They are simply powerless to do anything about the criminal behavior and only showed an interest in my child as a potential benefit to their state testing and overall school grade.

I refuse to sacrifice my son to the inner-city thug mentality at Young. I encountered many teachers at Young who are professional and well-intended, but in the end even they are limited by the attitudes and behaviors of the "student" body. If this is what Hillsborough County considers a "Magnet" school, then we may safely refer to Raiford Correctional Institute as a "Magnet Prison". Close Quote
