Summary

Marshall Middle Magnet School in Plant City, FL, serves 1,066 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Hillsborough school district, which ranks in the bottom half of Florida districts.

Marshall is a school of stark contrasts. Its advanced math program is exceptional: 79% of students are proficient in Algebra 1 and 95% in Geometry, far exceeding district and state averages. This performance rivals top area schools like Tomlin Middle School (95% Geometry proficiency). However, the school struggles significantly in core subjects. For example, only 33% of 8th graders are proficient in science (compared to 52% statewide), and 6th grade math proficiency is just 35% (versus 60% statewide). This creates a "tale of two schools" under one roof: a highly successful magnet program for advanced math, while the general education population lags behind. Nearby Mulrennan Middle School, for instance, outperforms Marshall in 6th grade ELA (66% vs. 47%) and has lower chronic absenteeism (27.3% vs. 36.4%).

Chronic absenteeism is a major challenge, with 36.4% of students missing significant school time in 2023-2024. While this rate is lower than some nearby schools like Mann Middle School (49.9%) and Southwest Middle School (52.1%), it is much higher than high-performing Lawton Chiles Middle Academy (15.3%). Despite spending more per student ($9,945) than the district average, Marshall's overall academic outcomes remain low, ranking in the 19th percentile statewide. The school has shown a slight upward trend in recent years, but reducing absenteeism and replicating the success of its advanced math program across all subjects will be key to future improvement.

Open Quote Worst school I have ever experienced. Have had several issues with the school over stepping their rights as an institution but not being allowed to pick up my student for a medical appointment today due to a test, when a schedule test make up day was already set by the school at the end of the week, completely takes the cake! In this environment some medical appointments have to be made 3 and 4 months out. Now I have to be charged for the appointment because I was not allowed to pick up my student, AND try to get another appointment and hope it's not another 3 months from now. Since when does a school have the right to refuse a parent pick up for a MEDICAL appointment?? Close Quote
