Summary

Wewahitchka Elementary School is a small, rural PK-5 school in Wewahitchka, FL, serving 448 students as part of the Gulf County School District, where over 53% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

This school shows a clear strength in early-grade math, with 3rd and 4th graders scoring above state averages in 2025-2026—75% proficient in 3rd grade math (9 points above the state) and 70% in 4th grade math (5 points above the state). However, a dramatic "5th grade cliff" emerges: 5th graders drop 17 points below the state average in math, ELA, and science, a pattern seen for three consecutive years. This suggests a systemic issue with the 5th-grade curriculum or transition that parents should investigate. The school has been recovering from a low point in 2023-2024 (24th percentile) to a 2-star rating (38th percentile) for 2025-2026, indicating recent improvements in lower grades.

A major concern is chronic absenteeism, which affects 44% of students—12.6 points higher than the state average. This community-wide challenge likely drags down overall performance. While per-student spending has risen to $12,231, academic outcomes, especially in 5th grade, don't yet reflect this investment. With no other schools within 20 miles, Wewahitchka Elementary is the sole elementary option in this rural area, making its success critical for local families. The school's future hinges on solving the 5th-grade performance drop and addressing absenteeism to build on its early-grade math strengths.

Open Quote WES has a new Principal with a strong vision for education. His love for students, teachers and staff has greatly improved the morale and made this beautiful campus a place where everyone is welcome. Learning and community involvement has been his focus in his first two months of the new position. Students are smiling and skipping on the way to class and teachers feel less pressure and are doing a marvelous job. Awesome place to work and learn. Close Quote
