Summary

R. C. Lipscomb Elementary School in Pensacola, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 692 students in grades PK through 5, and it stands out as a consistently above-average performer within the Escambia school district. The school has a strong track record of academic success, with proficiency rates in math, English Language Arts, and science that regularly exceed both the district and state averages. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, 73% of third graders were proficient in math compared to 63% district-wide, and 71% of fifth graders were proficient in science versus 59% for the district. This reliable performance makes Lipscomb a solid choice for families, especially when compared to many nearby schools.

One of Lipscomb's most notable strengths is its lower chronic absenteeism rate of 21.2%, which is significantly better than the district average of 33.5% and far below schools like Reinhardt Holm Elementary (40.2%) or Lincoln Park Elementary (43.9%). This suggests a positive school culture and strong family engagement. While Lipscomb is a top performer, it is not the absolute best in its immediate area; Pine Meadow Elementary, located just 1.3 miles away, consistently outperforms it and ranks in the 83rd percentile. However, Lipscomb is a much stronger option than its closest neighbor, L. D. McArthur Elementary, which has lower test scores despite similar spending per student.

Interestingly, the data shows that higher spending does not guarantee better outcomes. For instance, Lincoln Park Elementary spends the most per student ($14,647) but ranks in the 22nd percentile, while Lipscomb achieves top results with a more moderate $10,884 per student. Families should note that Lipscomb's state ranking has seen a slight decline from its peak in the mid-2010s, dropping from a 4-star to a 3-star rating in recent years. Still, it remains a reliable, above-average school, especially when compared to struggling nearby schools like Jackie Harris Preparatory Academy, which ranks in the 1st percentile. Overall, Lipscomb offers a stable and quality education in a district where many schools face significant challenges.

Open Quote I used "school choice" for Lipscomb rather than allow our child to attend a D-rated school. The kindergarten teacher was decent. 1st grade presented an issue in which the teacher is a controlled micro manger personality. Her desire to control meant "inside" recess in which children stood by their desk doing specified teacher directed "dance" movements. Those children miss out on "free" time to relax and do not get to run, scream, play, or socialize because this teacher claims she does not "trust the children to play outside." Recess should allow children to mentally and emotionally rest while physically expending energy so that children return to the classroom ready to focus on learning. Furthermore, "Experimental research found that children were less active after school on days when they had no recess and PE classes in school" (Dale, Corbin, & Dale, 2000). When I spoke to the principal about moving my child to a classroom in which her personality would be more nurtured, I was informed they do not change teachers on request. A good school recognizes while some children might do well with a micro manager, other children do not. Close Quote
