Summary

Duval Charter School At Coastal is a K-8 charter school in Jacksonville, FL, serving 1,082 students within the Duval school district, and it has experienced a significant and steady decline in academic performance over the past six years, dropping from the 83rd percentile in 2019 to the 35th percentile in 2025.

This school presents a stark contrast between its advanced coursework and its foundational skills. While it excels in high school-level exams—with proficiency rates of 97% in Algebra 1, 100% in Geometry, and 94% in Biology 1—its core elementary and middle school performance is alarmingly weak. For example, 5th-grade math proficiency is just 22%, and 5th-grade science is 42%. This suggests a "pipeline" problem where resources may be focused on top-performing students, leaving the majority behind. In comparison, nearby schools like J. Allen Axson Elementary (98th percentile) and River City Science Academy Intracoastal (88th percentile) are stable or improving, while Duval Charter is declining. The school also has a high student-teacher ratio of 20.4:1 and spends just $9,573 per student, significantly less than high-performing neighbors like Waterleaf Elementary ($14,440 per student) and Abess Park Elementary ($13,387 per student).

Despite the academic decline, chronic absenteeism is low at 12.3%, less than half the district rate, indicating students are consistently attending class. The school's free/reduced lunch population has risen sharply from 48.9% to 66.27% in recent years, reflecting increasing economic challenges. When compared to the nearby Kernan Trail Elementary (76th percentile, 39% free/reduced lunch, $11,014 per student, 16.4:1 ratio), Duval Charter's higher poverty, lower spending, and larger classes appear to be compounding its struggles. The school's leadership must urgently address the foundational skills gap in the middle grades to reverse its downward trajectory.

Open Quote I am unfortunately disappointed with the school staff at the front desk yelling at the kids. I was volunteering there when I witnessed how she treats the students and I am not sure what her problem is but she is a bully. I told her that she can’t scream and treat young children like this but she didn’t care. It is the blond older lady at the front and she should not be working around children with her tamper. I am in search for a new school because unfortunately this school is lacking a good leadership and kids are thought just the basics that will be on FSA tests. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is horrible. Do your homework. The Principal is a poor leader. He retaliated against my 6 year old after I had to report him. We had to pull him out of this school. They have had many withdrawls due to forcing kids to run laps in extreme hot weather ( young kids). The teachers are interetsed more in taking selfies with their clicks instead of watching children. The scores are inaccurate on website. The principal only hires young teachers that are weak and that need alot of help because they cant handle disipline on their. He looks at the teacher inappropriately. He intimidates people . Their is a high rate of bullying occurring here. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Close Quote
