Summary

Crystal Springs Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL, serves 883 students in grades PK-5 within the Duval County School District, where over half of the student body (55.27%) qualifies for free or reduced lunch. The school has faced significant challenges in recent years, with its state ranking dropping from the 47th percentile in 2017-2018 to the 22nd percentile in 2025-2026, resulting in a 1-star rating. The most pressing issue is an alarmingly high chronic absenteeism rate of 50.5% in 2023-2024, which far exceeds the state average of 31.4% and is among the highest in the area, surpassed only by nearby Ramona Boulevard Elementary (71.2%) and Hyde Grove Elementary (59.6%).

Despite these struggles, Crystal Springs shows a relative strength in 3rd Grade Math, where 58% of students were proficient in 2025-2026—close to the district average of 61% and notably higher than nearby schools like Westview K-8 (41%) and Duval Charter School At Westside (37%). However, even this bright spot is fading, as proficiency has dropped from 63% in 2023-2024. The school also spends a relatively high amount per student ($10,870 in 2024-2025), yet this funding has not translated into academic improvement, suggesting resources are being used to address deep-seated challenges like absenteeism and socio-economic factors rather than enrichment programs.

Comparing Crystal Springs to nearby schools with similar demographics reveals stark differences. Whitehouse Elementary, just 3.0 miles away, has a similar free/reduced lunch rate (52.11%) but has achieved a 3-star rating and outperforms Crystal Springs in every subject by 15-20 percentage points. Thomas Jefferson Elementary, 1.9 miles away, has a lower chronic absenteeism rate (37.1%) and consistently scores well above district averages. These comparisons highlight that Crystal Springs’ core challenge is its absenteeism crisis, and without a comprehensive community-based strategy to address it, the school risks continuing its downward trend while its neighbors improve.

Open Quote Your principal has no business dictating the mode of transportation. Suppose the mother and child "walked" home they could be killed by cars construction equipment etc. As long as the child leaves with the designated person I wouldn't care if they left in a rickshaw. Don't some kids leave on bikes?
