Summary

Hendricks Avenue Elementary School is a high-performing public school in Jacksonville, FL, serving 633 students from Pre-K through 5th grade and consistently ranking among the top 10% of all elementary schools in Florida. This school stands out dramatically from its neighbors in the Duval district, with 5th-grade science proficiency at 88% and math at 86%, compared to the next best nearby school, Pine Forest Elementary, which scores 61% and 62% respectively. The school's success is consistent over time, having earned 4 or 5-star ratings for the past decade, and it achieves these results with lower per-student spending ($9,625) than many of its lower-performing neighbors, such as Love Grove Elementary, which spends $15,120 per student.

What makes Hendricks Avenue particularly interesting is how it contrasts with the surrounding schools. While the Duval district overall ranks in the bottom third of Florida, Hendricks Avenue performs 20-30 percentage points above the state average in nearly every subject. The school also has a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 17.8%, less than half the district average of 44.8% and significantly lower than nearby schools like Ortega Elementary (54.2%) and Love Grove (50.1%). This strong attendance correlates with the school's high test scores, suggesting that getting kids to school every day is a key factor in academic success.

For parents considering this school, the data shows a stable, high-quality educational environment that outperforms every nearby school by a wide margin. The closest competitor, Pine Forest Elementary (just over a mile away), is a solid 3-star school but still trails Hendricks Avenue by 11 percentage points in 5th-grade ELA (82% vs. 71%). The school's success appears driven by a combination of factors including an engaged parent community and effective school leadership, rather than higher funding levels. This makes Hendricks Avenue a standout choice for families in the Jacksonville area who prioritize academic excellence and consistent performance.

Open Quote I was a student there, as were my children. Other than it being turned into a magnet school, I learned more there than I did in high school, and I exagerate not! The same is true for my children.

My two sisters also attended Hendricks, and were way above the curve in college and high school. Close Quote
