Summary

North Gardens High School in Miami Gardens, FL, is a small high school serving 454 students in grades 9-12 within the Miami-Dade district, but it faces severe challenges that set it apart from nearby schools. The most alarming metric is its graduation rate of 53.6% for the 2024-2025 school year, which is dramatically lower than the district average of 93.1% and far below nearby schools like Miami Lakes Educational Center (100%) and American Senior High School (99%). Additionally, the school has an extreme chronic absenteeism rate of 83.3%, nearly three times the district average, and a student-to-teacher ratio of 64.8:1, which is more than triple the ratio at schools like Miami Carol City Senior High (19:1).

Academic proficiency at North Gardens is critically low, with test scores in the single digits across all subjects, such as 4% in Algebra 1 and Geometry, and 8% in Biology 1. This contrasts sharply with high-performing peers like Miami Lakes Educational Center, which achieves proficiency rates of 70-96% in the same subjects. Even compared to a similar struggling school, North Park High School, North Gardens performs worse, with a lower graduation rate (53.6% vs. 55.8%) and a higher chronic absenteeism rate (83.3% vs. 79.5%). The school’s performance is an outlier even among low-performing schools in the district.

Interestingly, North Gardens has a very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (5.95%), which typically correlates with higher performance, but the school defies this trend, suggesting its struggles stem from systemic issues like severe staffing shortages and student disengagement. There is a glimmer of hope, as the graduation rate has improved from 16.1% in 2021-2022 to 53.6% in 2024-2025, indicating recent interventions may be helping keep students enrolled. However, the combination of a 64.8:1 student-teacher ratio, 83% chronic absenteeism, and single-digit test scores points to a school in crisis that requires immediate and drastic intervention to address these foundational problems.

Open Quote Hispanic girl in front desk thinks she owns the school. Gives limited info and has a very bad attitude. Spent more time flirting with a police officer that was there then helping me out. This was back in May, I hope she is no longer there. Close Quote
