Summary

Mandarin Lakes K-8 Academy in Homestead, FL, is a public school serving 643 students from Pre-K through 8th grade within the Miami-Dade school district, and it presents a unique story of stark contrasts that parents should understand.

The most critical issue at Mandarin Lakes is a severe chronic absenteeism crisis, with 43.2% of students missing significant school time in 2023-2024. This rate is dramatically higher than the district average of 28.2% and far exceeds nearby schools like Air Base K-8 Center For International Education, which has only an 8.5% chronic absenteeism rate despite being less than a mile away. This attendance problem likely explains why elementary test scores (grades 3-5) are very low—for example, only 27% of 3rd graders were proficient in English Language Arts compared to 64% district-wide. However, the school spends significantly more per student ($16,217) than high-performing neighbors like Air Base ($12,319) or Somerset Academy Silver Palms At Princeton ($9,572), indicating that funding alone isn't the solution.

Remarkably, Mandarin Lakes has a powerful "middle school effect." While only 26% of 5th graders were proficient in math, 76% of 8th graders achieved proficiency—a 50-point jump that far exceeds district averages. The school also achieves 100% proficiency on Algebra 1 and Geometry end-of-course exams. This suggests that once students consistently attend class, the middle school program is highly effective. The school is essentially a "diamond in the rough"—not uniformly failing, but held back by an attendance crisis that prevents younger students from building foundational skills. If the school can solve its absenteeism problem, its proven middle school success shows it has the potential to transform into a top performer.

Open Quote My daughter has been going there for 4 years, 2 years ago the school principal was changed and some other staff member , I see differences after that, for better. Before never honnor roll student was recognized only a diploma , now have ceremony to recognize the efforts the student do, and motivate them to be better , and olso since last years started a gifted class, for student who qualify. I'm so proud my daughter is part of this class, As a parent I reconize that the school is not the only responsable for education , we need to educate at home first, but most of the children unfortunately living in dysfunctional home with parents who does'nt care their education . who pay for those student behavior? school, teachers. NO, To be able to improve the school we need to be better as a parents, ... my opinion about the school es good , but if I could change something, I will separate those studient who have majors behavior problems from the others and give them special attention, also separate by academy group, advance class, standars class, given equal oportunity to learn to everybody, because when are all toguether, the teacher need to dedicate more time to the student who is behind and less time to the others. I think no student whants to stay behind others. Close Quote

Open Quote The teacher that posted the last comment is a racist who doesn't want to teach the students in the school. SHE STATED it in her post. She is miserable and should quit the teaching profession. You are a sad case and should be banned from schools and the teaching profession. I am ashamed to call you a colleague. I am a teacher here and clearly you are the problem because I do not see what you mentioned in your post. Go learn classroom management strategies and empathy for children. You are not anonymous. Open Quote As a teacher at Mandarin Lakes, I can tell you the reality of what it is like at the school. Most of the students have severe behavior problems and emotional issues. However, these students are kept in the general classroom setting with students who do not have these issues. As you can imagine, this creates a lot of issues of violence, bullying, aggression, defiance, disrespect, and overall chaos. The administration does not understand the severity of this issue, or if they do, they definitely do not do enough to REMOVE or SOLVE the problems. The administration simply pushes the issue aside or covers it up stating that the "students are misunderstood." The school environment is terrible. There are fights EVERY DAY. You walk down the hallway, you hear the students cussing at each other, pushing/hitting each other, talking back to the teachers, skipping class, etc. The academic progress of the students is hindered by the tremendous amount of behavior issues that occur on a daily basis. Yet, the data and scores are all the administration cares about. How can children learn and demonstrate progress when there are DISRUPTIONS, AGGRESSION, and DEFIANCE in the classroom? The whole school environment is backwards and is quickly falling apart. The student demographics and population is tough. These students come from broken homes, poor homes, violent homes, unsafe homes, no-parent homes, and some of them have no homes at all. Instead of receiving therapy for the ISSUES that they have, they are placed in the classroom and expected to blend in and work well with others. THEY LASH OUT. THEY YELL AT OTHERS. THEY HIT OTHERS. THEY SKIP CLASS. THEY TALK BACK TO ADULTS. They do all this because they are not receiving the help they need, and everyone else has to suffer because of this. Do yourself and your family a favor, do not send your child to this school. Close Quote
