Summary

Ben Sheppard Elementary School is a public PK-5 school in Hialeah, FL, serving 927 students within the Miami-Dade County Public School District, where about 63% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has a 3-star rating and ranks in the 51st percentile statewide, showing a recent rebound after some performance ups and downs over the past few years.

The standout feature at Ben Sheppard is its exceptional 3rd-grade math performance, with 83% of students proficient—well above the district and state averages, and even surpassing nearby schools like Bob Graham Education Center (72%) and Hialeah Gardens Elementary School (81%). This represents a remarkable 19-point jump from the previous year, suggesting a highly effective math program for that grade. The school also shows a strong upward trend in English Language Arts, with 3rd-grade proficiency rising from 45% to 64% over two years, now matching the district average. However, 5th-grade science is a clear weakness, with only 43% proficient compared to 59% district-wide, and nearby schools like West Hialeah Gardens Elementary School perform much better in this subject.

Ben Sheppard spends $13,125 per student, which is lower than several neighboring schools like John G. Dupuis Elementary School ($14,599) and Hialeah Gardens Elementary ($17,784), yet it achieves competitive results—a sign of efficient resource use. The school also manages chronic absenteeism well, with a rate of 21.2% that is below the district (28.2%) and state (31.4%) averages. For parents comparing options, Mater Academy, a charter school just a mile away, serves a more economically disadvantaged population (93% free/reduced lunch) but still outperforms Ben Sheppard in most subjects, which may point to areas for growth. Overall, Ben Sheppard offers strong early math and improving reading skills, but families should weigh the science gap and consider how the school sustains its 3rd-grade math success into later grades.

Open Quote This school displays insincerity . The principal appears to be helpful and concerned but it is only an act. Whenever a problem arises, he just delegates it to another person. The assistant principal not only lacks personal skills but empathy. Her nonchalant and insensitive attitude is anything but reassuring. My child has endured bullying on several occasions in this school and what faculty members do is cover it up and sugarcoat it. "No it is not bullying. It is only arguing or disagreeing amongst children". Wake up, bullying is a widespread epidemic and is only getting worse! No need to downplay it. What I have learned with my experiences with this school is that the teacher makes all the difference. Close Quote
