Summary

Ponce De Leon Middle School is a public school in Coral Gables, FL, serving 778 students in grades 6-8 within the Miami-Dade district, where about half of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school presents a unique profile: it excels in advanced coursework but struggles with standard grade-level assessments. For example, in the most recent data, 93% of students passed the Biology 1 end-of-course exam, and 83% passed Algebra 1—both well above state averages. However, only 36% of 8th graders met the state standard in science, compared to 52% statewide, and just 43% of 7th graders were proficient in math, versus 53% statewide. This gap is especially stark when compared to nearby schools. George Washington Carver Middle School, less than a mile away, ranks in the 98th percentile statewide with proficiency rates above 90% in nearly every subject. Somerset Academy Charter Middle School (South Miami Campus) and South Miami Middle School also significantly outperform Ponce De Leon in standard assessments. The school's chronic absenteeism rate of 27.5% is much higher than these top-performing neighbors, which have rates as low as 3.5%.

On a positive note, English Language Arts scores have been steadily improving across all grades over the past three years, suggesting recent literacy efforts are working. The school also spends more per student ($12,659) than several higher-performing peers, indicating that funding is not the primary issue. The main challenge for Ponce De Leon is to lift its general education program to match the success of its advanced tracks, particularly in 7th grade math, which has been a persistent weak spot.

Open Quote While this school is often portrayed to be a leading school as it features an IB program, it is poorly managed and definitely not a safe environment: unruly kids in classrooms with teachers who are overwhelmed and spend more time writing reports than teaching. If you can, take your kid elsewhere! Close Quote
