Summary

Southside Preparatory Academy is a public elementary and middle school (PK-8) in Miami, FL, serving 873 students as part of the Miami-Dade school district, and has shown consistent academic improvement over the past four years, now ranking in the 77th percentile statewide with a 4-star rating.

This school stands out for its exceptional performance in Biology 1, where 95% of students scored proficient in 2025-2026—a full 20 points above the district average—and for its strong elementary grades, with 5th-grade ELA and math proficiency rates of 85% and 80%, respectively. However, there is a notable "middle school slump" in math: while 5th-grade math is strong at 80% proficiency, it drops to 62% in 6th grade and plummets to 39% in 7th grade, falling below the district average. Another interesting contrast is in science: the school excels in high-school-level Biology but struggles with 8th-grade general science (31% proficient), a 64-point gap that is the largest in the area. Nearby Ada Merritt K-8 Center (0.93 miles away) outperforms Southside in every subject and grade, highlighting different challenges despite Southside's strong district performance. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism is very low at 11.8%, compared to the district's 28.2%, indicating high student engagement.

Southside's spending per student ($12,259) is in the middle of the pack among nearby schools, and the data shows that spending does not predict success—for example, Frederick R. Douglass Elementary spends the most ($20,085) but ranks lower. The school's upward trajectory over four years is a positive sign, especially compared to schools like Riverside Elementary School and Alpha Charter Of Excellence, which are in decline. For parents, Southside offers a strong elementary foundation and standout science opportunities, but the middle school math dip and 8th-grade science gap are areas to watch closely.

Open Quote I use to this school and I am glad to say I left it. This school gives horrible food and the cafeteria is full of cockroaches(not only the cafeteria). The staff can be really rude. Trust me when I say it is better to go to another school. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has been studying at this school for 2 years and I am very satisfied. More than a good education the environment is also very good. The school provides extracurricular activities for the students and the PTA is wide open to all families. Close Quote

Open Quote Ok, I was told this school was one of the top 11 schools in the state, boy was I wrong, it is ranked 840's. Wow. My kid started here and my child has gone thru many teachers due to teacher personal reasons, ESL issues(first language of child is English), removal of teacher, etc. Am I impressed? No. My child right now could care less if he/she is txfrd to another school. The teachers are not friendly. One teacher who teaches Kindergarten is the most unprofessional teacher I have seen: eating in front of students, screaming at them in front of parents. I also do not want my child to attend the after care program since too many negative comments from the kids have been voiced. I have seen the aftercare teachers yell at Kindergartenders! Whaat!? I heard from my neighbor's son they do the homework for the kids instead of helping, and other gripes. Conclusion: Am I happy w/the school? It's OK. Many want their kid to go here; I am impressed w/the level my child is learning, phew, it's pretty advanced and I am very involved w/my child everyday in homework completion. Also, don't like the fact that there are dances at the school. I am not a church-going person, but I want my child to act like a child not a teen. Close Quote
