Summary

Morningside K-8 Academy is a public school in Miami, FL, serving 406 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, and it stands out as a remarkable success story in a community where many nearby schools face significant challenges.

What truly sets Morningside apart is its exceptional middle school performance. In 7th and 8th grade, students dramatically outperform both the Miami-Dade district and state averages. For example, 8th-grade science proficiency (78%) is 29 points above the district, and 7th-grade math (87%) is 29 points higher. The school also excels in end-of-course exams, with a remarkable 97% proficiency in Civics. This is especially impressive when compared to the only other K-8 center in the area, Edison Park K-8 Center, where 8th-grade ELA proficiency (46%) is nearly half of Morningside's (84%). Even compared to the higher-performing Miami Shores Elementary School, which has a lower poverty rate, Morningside's middle school scores are far superior. The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of just 11.1%, a fraction of the 30-43% rates seen at nearby schools like Orchard Villa Elementary School and Arcola Lake Elementary School, indicating strong student engagement and family connections.

While the elementary grades show a more mixed picture, with 3rd-grade scores slightly below district averages, the school demonstrates a powerful ability to accelerate learning as students progress. With a favorable student-teacher ratio of 15:1 and efficient use of resources, Morningside is a clear outlier of success in its area, proving that a school can overcome socioeconomic challenges to achieve high levels of student achievement, particularly in the critical middle school years.

Open Quote My husband and I could easily afford the most expensive private schools in Miami for our son but believe strongly in supporting and participating in our local public school. And while I admit we were nervous about enrolling our only child in this school we have completely been won over by the small class sizes (15 kids in his class!), amazing teachers, helpful and friendly staff who really love what they do....I just can't say enough. Yes the school could benefit from more resources but this is true of all Dade County schools and there is direct correlation between parent participation/community support and school resources. Additionally, the historical campus is beautiful and I think as more community support is garnered the school will just continue to get better. Close Quote

Open Quote Our experience at Morningside has been amazing. The teachers and other staff have been awesome, really accessible and responsive. They really work with you as a parent/teacher partnership and as a result my child is excelling academically. The school is a hidden gem in a neighborhood undergoing a lot of transition and there is so much potential here. I am so glad we chose to send our child here since they are so happy at this school.
