Summary

Gulfstream Elementary School in Cutler Bay, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 544 students in grades PK-5 within the Miami-Dade district, where 61.2% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Gulfstream stands out for its exceptionally low student-teacher ratio of 11.1:1, the lowest among nearby schools, and its high per-student spending of $24,595—more than double that of top-performing Mater Academy Bay Elementary ($11,472) and significantly higher than Whispering Pines Elementary ($13,227). Despite these investments, Gulfstream’s academic outcomes have declined, dropping from a 3-star rating to a 2-star rating in the most recent data. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 31.6% is a critical concern, more than double the rates at nearby high-achieving schools like Whispering Pines (15.2%) and Mater Academy Bay (15.4%). This suggests that attendance issues, not a lack of resources, may be the primary barrier to student success.

Math performance is a relative bright spot, with 4th-grade Math proficiency reaching 71% in 2025-2026, tying the district average and exceeding the state average. However, this strength does not carry over to 5th grade, where Math proficiency drops to 52%. Science scores, which surged to 71% in 2023-2024, have since fallen to 52%, indicating that past success may have been an anomaly. Compared to its closest neighbor, Cutler Ridge Elementary, which spends less ($14,594) and has larger classes (17.2:1), Gulfstream underperforms in key areas like 3rd-grade ELA (54% vs. 62%). For parents, Gulfstream offers small class sizes and targeted math strengths, but addressing chronic absenteeism will be essential to unlocking its full potential.

Open Quote Great school. In the 2011-2012 school year, Gulfstream got an A rating from the state even with the new higher standard that Florida made. The Principle that was brought in the previous year really has changed the feeling of the school. She has a very open door policy with parents. I highly recommend Gulfstream.
