Summary

Mary M Bethune Elementary School is a public school in Hollywood, FL, serving 319 students from Pre-K through 5th grade, and is part of the Broward school district.

This school is in the midst of a remarkable turnaround. After years of ranking in the bottom 25% of Florida elementary schools, it has jumped to the 45th percentile, earning a 2-star rating. The most impressive sign of progress is in math: 79% of 3rd graders were proficient in math, which is higher than the district average and far above nearby schools like Oakridge Elementary School (64%) and Dania Elementary School (63%). The school also invests heavily in its students, spending $18,175 per student—the highest among nearby schools—and maintaining a low student-teacher ratio of 11.8:1. This investment appears to be paying off, with 5th grade science proficiency more than doubling from 21% to 50% in just three years.

However, the school faces significant challenges. While math scores are strong, English Language Arts (ELA) scores lag far behind, with a 30-point gap between 3rd grade math and reading proficiency. Chronic absenteeism is a critical issue, with nearly 40% of students missing too many days, a rate much higher than the state average and far above the 5.9% rate at the nearby top-performing Beachside Montessori Village. This contrast highlights the scale of the challenge Bethune faces, but the recent upward trend in test scores shows that the school is on the right track. Continued focus on attendance and reading will be essential to sustain this progress.

Open Quote Based on the comments of various staff members, there is a morale problem. If the Administrators were more supportive of the mission to provide a quality education for the children, the math and reading scores might improve. Some of the teachers received helpful suggestions from District Personnel, but were not allowed to implement the suggested changes. I noted that some veteran teachers simply left the school and took their expertise elsewhere. Perhaps some exit interviews would help identify why some experienced and knowledgeable teachers chose not to work at Bethune Elementary. No one wants to work in a hostile work environment.
