Summary

Sunrise Middle School in Fort Lauderdale, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 1,141 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Broward County Public School District, and it has a stable, average 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. This school stands out for its exceptional performance in advanced coursework, with students taking End-of-Course (EOC) exams in Geometry, Algebra 1, and Biology 1 consistently outperforming the district and state by wide margins—for example, 100% proficiency in Geometry and 89% in Biology 1. However, there is a significant "8th Grade Math Cliff," where only 27% of 8th graders are proficient in grade-level math, compared to the state average of 61%, suggesting the school excels at accelerating top performers but may struggle to support average students in core math skills.

Compared to nearby schools, Sunrise Middle has a notably lower chronic absenteeism rate of 27.2%, which is better than the average of about 36.5% for peers like Attucks Middle School and Plantation Middle School, indicating stronger student engagement. The school also performs consistently at or above the state average in English Language Arts across all grades, a strength not shared by many nearby schools. An interesting contrast is Somerset Academy Village Charter Middle School, which, despite having the highest poverty rate in the area, is the highest-ranked school in the group, showing that a small, focused model can achieve exceptional results even with high needs.

Sunrise Middle has seen a positive trend in its socioeconomic profile, with the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced lunch dropping from 64% to 46% in just two years, possibly due to rising property values. The school also has a "Civics Gap," underperforming the state average in Civics EOC exams, which presents an opportunity for curriculum improvement. Spending per student is moderate at $10,733, and the data shows that spending does not directly correlate with performance, as William Dandy Middle School spends the most but ranks lower. Overall, Sunrise Middle is a solid choice for families, especially those with students interested in advanced math and science, but parents should be aware of the challenges in 8th-grade math support.

Open Quote They fail kids completely- no responsibilities. Since we took our kid away 1,5 year ago- he’s straight A student with very strong achievements. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is a disgrace! I substituted here and I was worried for my safety as well as other students. The administration is terrible and lets kids roam around the hallway. When security is called nothing is done. The classrooms are very dirty and the school textbooks are outdated. This school needs a major change! Close Quote

Open Quote I have a daughter who is attending the Montessori and gem programs @ Sunrise Middle. I am on campus frequently and I find that the administration, staff and teachers are very focused on providing the foundation for every student to get a good education. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is very ghetto. The kids can be scary and in the halls are rowdy. I, a current student at Sunrise, feel unsafe as if kids will hurt me. Last year, there were many gang fights. The Montessori Program is much better than the traditional program between academics and the people overall. I would've preferred to attend any other middle school, even Parkway. :)Mr. Webster, aka Webinator is the best!!!! Close Quote
