Lockmar Elementary School

Summary:

Lockmar Elementary School is a public elementary school in Palm Bay, Florida, serving 583 students in grades PK-6 and part of the Brevard District, which is ranked 22 out of 68 districts in the state.

While Lockmar has a higher percentage of White students (54.55%) compared to nearby schools, it faces several challenges. The school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.9% in 2019-2020 to 22.9% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the district and state averages. Lockmar's test scores in English Language Arts and Math are generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in 5th and 6th grades. For example, in 2023-2024, Lockmar's 5th-grade ELA proficiency was 40%, compared to 57% for the district and 55% for the state. Additionally, Lockmar has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 57.8% to 62.5% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students.

Lockmar's performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 421 out of 2,064 Florida elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 1,073 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024, and its SchoolDigger rating decreasing from 4 stars to 3 stars. When compared to nearby schools, such as Meadowlane Intermediate Elementary School, Lockmar generally underperforms in terms of test scores, chronic absenteeism, and free/reduced lunch rates. The opening of Pineapple Cove Classical Academy at Lockmar, located just 0.48 miles from Lockmar Elementary, may present both opportunities and challenges for the school.

Open Quote My daughter is in kindergarten at Lockmar Elementary School in Palm Bay, FL, and she was in a private preschool from the time she was almost 3 so she participated in the Florida VPK program. I have thus far been happily impressed that this school has lived up to its reputation. She is already doing simple reading two months in and is very much enjoying school, whereas the preschool she was in before did not inspire nearly such a drive to excel. All the teachers I have spoken with and dealt with have inspired my trust and confidence, and are very pleasant and yet you can tell they take their jobs seriously. So far, a five star experience. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
