Summary

Littlewood Elementary School in Gainesville, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 714 students from Pre-K through 5th grade, and it consistently performs as a solid, middle-of-the-pack option within the Alachua district.

Littlewood stands out for its strong math scores, which have been significantly higher than the district average in recent years. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, math proficiency rates for grades 3-5 ranged from 61% to 67%, compared to the district's 52% to 56%. This makes it a reliable choice for families prioritizing math education, especially when compared to nearby schools like Glen Springs Elementary School or William S. Talbot Elementary School, which also perform well but have different strengths. However, the school's biggest challenge is a persistent chronic absenteeism rate, which has hovered around 30% in recent years—much higher than Glen Springs (19.8%) or Talbot (19.2%). This issue likely masks the true potential of the school, as the students who attend regularly perform well, but a significant portion of the student body is missing out on instruction.

While Littlewood's math performance is a clear strength, its 5th-grade science scores are a point of concern, falling below the state average and significantly behind top-performing neighbors like Talbot (83%) and Boulware Springs Charter (68%). The school's per-student spending ($12,115) and student-teacher ratio (14.2) are typical for the area, suggesting that resources are not the issue. Instead, addressing the absenteeism problem would be the most impactful step the school could take to improve its overall performance and ensure all students benefit from its solid academic foundation.

Open Quote The teachers in this school are in a coma and the poor children reflect it. I have never seen such level of apathy and fear on the part of the teachers. Something is really wrong with this school. I would not recommend this school to anyone who cares about their children. Close Quote

Open Quote My granddaughter has just started kindergarten there, she was excited to start, but now she is not happy, she is a happy child, very loving & she wants to be a helper in her class but the teacher never lets her help. I believe the teacher has a personal problem with my grandchild, I am very very unhappy with the attitude of the teacher. The teacher got in her face, now my granddaughter is 5 years old, new to going to school & she truly loves all people & has been raised to respect adults, & yelled at her for the way she was washing her hands! I believe this is going a little overboard. My sister is a school teacher for 1st graders & I explained some situations to her & she stated that the teachers are to teach, train & be loving towards all children no matter the race, poor, rich or anything!! My daughter works with small children & has a huge heart towards all children, she DOES NOT choose one over the other. I told my daughter to go & have a meeting with the teacher & principle, my sister agrees. I am very upset over the situation, I do not recommend this school to anyone. The office personnel is very rude!! Close Quote
