Summary

Kuumba Academy Charter School is an elementary school serving grades K-8 in Wilmington, Delaware, with 599 students. The school is part of the Kuumba Academy Charter School District, which is ranked 27th out of 32 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kuumba Academy consistently underperforms the state average on standardized tests across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 22.22% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA compared to the state average of 38.72%. The school also struggles to serve certain student subgroups effectively, with male students, female students, African American students, and low-income students all performing poorly compared to their peers statewide. Additionally, Kuumba Academy has had very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 19.7% to 30.2% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average.

The schools closest to Kuumba Academy, such as Johnson (Joseph E. Junior) Elementary School, Edison (Thomas A.) Charter School, and The Bayard School, also perform poorly on academic measures and have high chronic absenteeism, suggesting broader challenges facing schools in this area of Wilmington. However, the nearby First State Montessori Academy, a charter school, significantly outperforms Kuumba Academy and the state average on academic measures, demonstrating that a high-quality educational model can be successful even in this challenging urban environment.

Open Quote This was our first year attending Kuumba Academy. My son took part of their kindergarten program and it was a success. When my son first entered Kuumba he did not know the basics, reading, writing, spelling or simple math. By the end of the school year my son became top of his class for math, excellent reader, speller and can write basic sentences as well as comprehend his readings. The dedication from the staff and the work that we did at home made his experience an excellent one. Kindergarten is the breaking point for kids to find out if they like or not school and I am happy to say my son loves it. Having Spanish as the school language program is a plus. Doors of opportunities are endless when you are bilingual. Close Quote
