Summary:

ZIP code 20016 has five schools: three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. In 2025–26, their average proficiency was 78% in English language arts (ELA) and 71% in math, compared with state results of 40% and 28%. Because the schools serve different grade spans, these all-grades results are an area-wide picture, not a comparison of the same student grades. All five schools scored above the state in both subjects, but math results varied widely: the range was 53 percentage points, driven largely by Jackson-Reed High School’s result.

Key Elementary School narrowly led in ELA with 82.0%, just 0.4 points above Janney Elementary School at 81.6%; Janney led in math at 87%, about 5 points above Key. Deal Middle School also scored strongly, with 81% in ELA and 74% in math. At the other end, Jackson-Reed had the lowest results: its 69% in ELA was 7 points below the next-lowest result, Mann Elementary School’s 75%; its 35% in math was 39 points below Deal. SchoolDigger ranks Deal 1st of 68 statewide, Janney 2nd of 124, Key 4th of 124 and Mann 11th of 124.

Across the five schools, average results rose from 74% to 78% in ELA and from 67% to 71% in math between 2024–25 and 2025–26, while state results increased by about 2 points in each subject. Gains were uneven: Key improved by about 8 points in both subjects, while Jackson-Reed declined by about 1 point in each. Context measures do not follow a simple pattern with test results: in 2024–25, the share directly certified for free meals ranged from 3% at Key to 14% at Jackson-Reed, while student–teacher ratios ranged from 12.4 at Mann to 13.8 at Deal. Jackson-Reed also had a 90.5% graduation rate in 2024–25, above the state’s 78.7%.
