Summary

Friendship PCS - Southeast Middle is a public charter school in Southeast Washington, DC, serving 293 students in grades 4–8 as part of the Friendship PCS network, and it has become one of the strongest-performing middle schools in its immediate neighborhood. The school has climbed steadily from a 2-star, 46th-percentile ranking in 2021-2022 to a 4-star, 78th-percentile ranking (15th out of 67 DC middle schools) in 2025-2026. Its biggest academic strength is English Language Arts, where 44.9% of students score proficient — well above both the citywide average of 34.6% and the state average of 39.6%. Upper-grade literacy results are especially strong, with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders all exceeding state averages by 10 points or more.

Mathematics is the school's most significant challenge, with just 13.7% of students proficient compared with the state average of 28.2%. The 4th grade math result of 2% proficiency is a particular outlier worth understanding. Nearby schools show a mixed picture: DC Prep PCS - Anacostia Middle School posts stronger math (27.8%) but trails in ELA (37.3%), while Hart Middle School (21.7% ELA), Johnson Middle School (11.8% ELA), KIPP DC - AIM Academy PCS (20.0% ELA), and KIPP DC - Honor Academy PCS (18.5% ELA) all trail Friendship Southeast significantly in reading. The school also outperforms Digital Pioneers Academy PCS - Johenning overall, ranking 15th versus 36th statewide.

What really sets this school apart is how well it serves historically underserved students. Low-socioeconomic-status students rank 5th out of 51 schools statewide (up from 17th two years ago), a sign the school is effectively closing opportunity gaps. Per-student spending has risen from about $20,000 to nearly $32,000 over four years, while the student-teacher ratio improved from 13.9 to 11.8. Interestingly, the same network's Friendship PCS - Chamberlain Middle has far stronger math (24.0%) but slightly weaker ELA, suggesting the two campuses could learn from each other. Friendship Southeast is a rapidly improving, literacy-strong school; closing the math gap is the clearest next step toward becoming a top-tier middle school citywide.
