Gilmartin School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Waterbury School District in Connecticut, with 482 students. However, the school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, scoring in the bottom 10% across various academic metrics for the past several years.

Gilmartin School significantly lags behind the Waterbury School District and Connecticut state averages in proficiency rates for English Language Arts and Mathematics. For example, in 2024-2025, only 15.4% of 4th graders at Gilmartin were proficient in ELA, compared to 28.1% in the district and 51.4% statewide. Open Quote I cannot day enough about a handful of teacher in that school. They are amazing.

But administration, and many other teachers are not easy to work with. They teach and discipline in a cookie cutter fashion leaving no room for the creative child, and definitely no room for the concerned parent. As a parent I feel alienated, I feel I’m unable to speak up out of repercussions on my children. I’ve tried talking, meetings and going down town but in this city you get nowhere. I’m counting down the days until my children are out of the Waterbury school system. Close Quote
