Summary

Stafford High School is a small public high school in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, serving 357 students in grades 9–12 within the Stafford School District. The school sits near the middle of Connecticut's high school rankings, placing in the 51st percentile with 3 stars. With a low student-teacher ratio of 9.7 and per-pupil spending of about $19,441, the school is reasonably well resourced. Roughly 39% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a higher poverty rate than nearby Somers High School (5.3%) and Tolland High School (16.4%) but lower than Enfield High School (47.3%) and Rockville High School (52.6%).

Stafford's strengths are clear in several areas. Graduation rates have stayed above 90% every year, reaching 98.1% in 2023–2024, and chronic absenteeism runs below the state average at 15.4% versus 16.4% statewide. In 11th-grade testing, the school tops Connecticut averages in both ELA (56.3% vs. 55.3%) and science (58.8% vs. 50.5%). The standout result, however, is with disadvantaged students: Stafford earned a 5-star ranking for low-income student outcomes in 2022–2023 and a 4-star ranking for special education students. The school clearly punches above its weight for students who often face the biggest hurdles.

The major concern is math. Just 21.8% of Stafford 11th graders scored proficient, roughly 10 points below the state average and far behind Ellington High School (42.6%) and Somers High School (45.5%). This marks a sharp decline from 48% in 2022–2023, and it is the main reason the school's overall rank has slipped from the 73rd to the 51st percentile. Still, compared with the Academy of Computer Science and Engineering, Stafford delivers far better outcomes at about 75% of the spending. While Somers High School and Coventry High School post higher overall scores, they serve far fewer low-income families, and Stafford's results with the students it serves remain genuinely strong.
