Scotland Elementary School serves 318 students in grades PK–5 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, a suburban town in Fairfield County, and is part of the highly regarded Ridgefield School District. The school remains a strong performer by state standards — ranking 40th out of 491 Connecticut elementary schools in 2025–26 with a 5-star rating — but it now sits in the lower half of Ridgefield's own exceptional elementary lineup. In 2024–25, Scotland ranked 53rd and was the lowest-ranked elementary school in the district, so the recent improvement shows signs of stabilization.

Scotland's test scores are dramatically higher than Connecticut's statewide averages. For example, 78% of Scotland 3rd graders were proficient in math in 2025–26, compared to 52.2% statewide, and 5th grade ELA proficiency reached 83.3% versus 53.5% statewide. However, the school often trails its own district average — 4th grade math proficiency was 75.4% compared to the Ridgefield average of 82.8%. The contrast with nearby Barlow Mountain Elementary School is especially striking: the two schools are just 0.14 miles apart, yet Barlow Mountain outperformed Scotland in every reported subject in both years, despite Scotland having the district's lowest student-teacher ratio (11.3) and a very low free/reduced-price lunch rate of 4.1%.

One of the clearest areas of concern is the school's effectiveness with male students, which fell from the 96th–97th percentile in 2022–23 and 2023–24 to the 61st percentile in 2024–25, while female students have remained consistently solid. Scotland also shows notable grade-level variability — 4th grade ELA swung from 90.5% proficiency in 2022–23 to 69.5% in 2024–25 — and 5th grade science slipped from leading the district at 94.9% to trailing it at 77.8%. Chronic absenteeism is a bright spot at 4.3%, far below the state average, though slightly higher than nearby Ridgebury Elementary School (2.0%) and Veterans Park Elementary School (3.0%).

Scotland Elementary is like one of the best private schools - but it is public! It has caring teachers, an amazing principal and a close-knit group of parents that are actively involved in the school. I have two children who attend the school and have been impressed by all that they have learned through the well-rounded curriculum. Art, music, physical education complement a rigorous academic program of math, science, reading and writing.

The school also has wonderful traditions such as Scotty spirit day (the Scotland terrier is the mascot of course), Halloween (all the teachers and the principal dress up), parties at the end and beginning of the school year, Chess night, Math night and much, much more. It is also in one of the most beautiful locations in Ridgefield. I would recommend Scotland to any parent interested in giving their children the best elementary education. Close Quote
