Summary

East Haven High School is a public high school serving 878 students in grades 9-12 in East Haven, Connecticut, which is part of the East Haven School District. While the school has some strengths, such as the performance of its Hispanic students, it faces significant challenges in terms of academic achievement, graduation rates, and student engagement.

On standardized tests, East Haven High School has consistently underperformed compared to the state average. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 43.1% of 11th graders were proficient or better in SAT/English Language Arts, and just 19.6% were proficient or better in SAT/Math, both well below the state averages. The school's four-year graduation rate has also fluctuated between 77.1% and 88.9% in recent years, which is below the state average. Additionally, East Haven High School has had high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 15.2% to 22.8% in recent years, significantly higher than the state average.

Compared to nearby schools, East Haven High School generally performs worse on academic metrics. For example, North Haven High School, located about 3.5 miles away, consistently outperforms East Haven High School on standardized tests, with significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA, Math, and Science. Despite spending more per student ($17,889 in 2018-2019) than the state average, East Haven High School's academic outcomes do not reflect this higher investment, suggesting that addressing the school's challenges will require a comprehensive approach to improve the educational experience and outcomes for its students.

Open Quote Educationally, this school is not apples-to-apples with others such as Branford or North Branford. East Haven's honors classes are more like regular level classes in those schools. Socially, it's a larger scale school so that is a positive, but the kids are rough (especially if you're not used to the East Haven environment). Although almost all schools, including E.H.H.S., they claim to be "non-tolerant" to bullying, I've seen cases otherwise. There are fights and such, as any high school has, but possibly more frequently than the norm. East Haven clearly doesn't have "great" school systems, educationally or socially, but they aren't the absolute worst either. Close Quote
